Bright, powerful "candles" of Buzulnik Przewalski draw attention from afar. Numerous majestic flower stalks rise above the curtains of carved foliage. The Latin name for ligularia comes from the appearance of the marginal reed flowers. Let's take a closer look at a wonderful plant
Biological features
Buzulnik Przewalski is a perennial form of the herbaceous structure of the Asteraceae family. Bears the surname of the famous Russian traveler Nikolai Mikhailovich, who studied plants in his scientific expeditions.
The powerful rhizome structure of the underground part makes it easy to keep the bushes in case of gusts of wind. Large, graceful leaves are arranged alternately in the lower half. The plates are strongly dissected, juicy, green in color, outwardly resembling the resemblance to the fingers of a hand. Attached to the stem with brownish-red petioles.
Peduncle height reaches 150 meters. The upper third part is occupied by the "spike" inflorescence, which resembles giant fluffy candles. Consists of small yellowish buds. The marginal flowers are ligulate, the inner ones are tubular. They unfold gradually from the bottom up from July to the end of August.
At the beginning of autumn, seeds of a dark brown shade, elongated with a "tuft" at the end, ripen. It helps the planting material to fly over long distances and populate new territories.
Habitat
In the wild, it is found in the mountainous areas of Mongolia, China, at an altitude of more than 1 km above sea level. As a cultivated plant, it is grown in gardens, parks in America and Europe.
It settles along the banks of rivers, lakes, ponds, in forest wet glades, floodplain lowlands in the openwork shade of tall trees and bushes.
Better conditions
Ligularia loves moist, fertile lands with a good drainage base. Prefers partial shade. In open areas on hot days, the leaves wither, losing precious moisture due to evaporation of the large surface of the plates. With the onset of evening, they are recovering.
High frost resistance allows you to do without additional shelter in the cold season. Poorly tolerated in windy places. They feel better under the protection of a fence, walls of buildings, hedges.
Advantages
Growing ligularia in a garden plot is distinguished by a number of positive factors:
1. Long-lasting spectacular flowering.
2. Decorativeness throughout the season.
3. Unpretentious care.
4. Ability to withstand shady, damp places.
5. Versatility of use for flower arrangements, in a complex color scheme of the flower bed.
6. Perfectly covers nondescript places (farm buildings, compost heaps, cesspools).
Budulnik Przewalski deserves respect from amateurs and professional designers.
Landscape application
Attractive flower stalks allow the budulnik to be used as a leader, planting it in the center of the flower garden. Around are medium-sized neighbors: Volzhanka, Basil, Meadowsweet, Rogers. The lower tier is occupied by: hosts, primroses, incense, lungwort, brunner, physalis bubble, geychera, tiarella.
Single and group solitary plantings of bushes look spectacular against the background of a mowed lawn or a monochromatic live, dense hedge. Looks picturesque among conifers, green bushes. Not replaceable in the coastal landscape near artificial reservoirs, fountains, streams.
In terms of colors, red, blue, white shades of neighbors are suitable for a buzulnik. Ornamental grasses (rushes, sedges, miscanthus) perfectly set off the yellowness of ligularia.
Inflorescences, graceful leaves are played with pleasure in bouquets by florists.
We will consider the reproduction of Przewalski's buzulnik in the next article.
