Some houseplants are grown in a climate that is not entirely favorable for them, which is why they often suffer. As a rule, the main problems in the cultivation of such crops, which are not intended for temperate climates, are limited space for development and an almost constant lack of lighting. This applies very strongly to seedlings that develop during autumn or winter, when daylight hours have an extremely short period
Every plant needs the light of the sun's rays, because without it, photosynthesis, which is important for any culture, cannot take place. The results of photosynthesis are the production of substances such as starch, sugars and other components necessary for the growth of seedlings. In the case when plants receive a small amount of light, its development is slow and sluggish, moreover, the culture becomes easily accessible to various pests and viruses. Any summer resident wants to see only strong and healthy seedlings, which will later become plants that give a good harvest.
That is why it is worth taking care of additional lighting of the seedlings even before the seeds are sown into the soil. It is good that now there are a lot of technologies that allow you to create a wide variety of lamps, specialized in artificial illumination of seedlings.
A bit of theory
Undoubtedly, the best light for any living organism is the sun. Some part of this lighting can be seen with human vision, and some cannot. However, both of these parts are important for plants, and the waves of illumination should have different lengths at different periods of development of vegetable, fruit and flower crops. It is customary to divide the spectra of light by shades, where the blue and red parts contribute to the intensive production of chlorophyll, that is, when such a spectrum is obtained, the plant accelerates its development. In indoor conditions, the orange part of the spectrum also plays an important role, since it affects the good formation of fruits. Yellow and green shades are reflected from the leaves, but they are also needed for the full cultivation of any crop. Invisible parts of the lighting provide fight and protection against bacteria and fungi that cause various diseases. But at the same time, ultraviolet rays can create a lot of problems, which sometimes become more than beneficial effects. Seedlings are good for infrared radiation, which helps the plant acquire the lush greenery and provides it with warmth.
The best lamps for lighting seedlings
Of course, artificially created lighting cannot completely replace sunlight, but in some conditions it helps to create favorable factors for the normal development of seedlings. But this is not all, because it is thanks to special lamps that it is possible to create a growing season for plants all year round, which will allow you to get not one, but several harvests. Also, thanks to lamps, many crops can be grown even in closed rooms without windows.
But not all light sources are ready to give just such an effect. For example, incandescent bulbs are the most popular now, but they are unusable because only five percent of the energy is used as light. Everything else goes into providing heat. In other words, in this case, the plants will not so much be illuminated as they will heat up, which threatens the elongation and thinness of the sprouts, as well as getting burns.
Special lamps for illuminating seedlings should include a certain type of radiation that will help crops grow faster even in adverse conditions and sooner reach sizes that allow plants to be planted in open beds. They also consume less electricity and generate less heat.
Sodium lamps
Such lamps are divided into several types, and the most popular brands are produced by the domestic company Reflax. Their lighting does not irritate human eyesight. It is also worth paying attention to General Electric, Philips, OSRAM lamps. Among them there are also specimens with a capacity of up to one hundred watts.
Phytolamps
Fluora phyto lamps are also good for highlighting seedlings. A pair of eighteen-watt lamps on the same shelf with the seedlings will help the plants grow normally. In domestic phytolamps, those on which the LFU-30 marking is present are considered the best.
