Iron vitriol in gardening: is it needed and why?

Iron vitriol has been quite actively used in gardening for more than a decade, and many summer residents do not even think about abandoning its use, because this substance is rightfully considered not only one of the best means for combating gluttonous pests, but also valuable an assistant for the healing of plants, allowing you to quickly get rid of a number of dangerous ailments! So is iron sulfate needed in modern gardening, and if so, why?

Iron vitriol - what is it?

Ferrous sulfate, called ferrous sulfate, is an inorganic compound that is a salt of sulfuric acid. It has the appearance of a rather friable greenish crystalline powder, while the crystals of this substance boast a minimal percentage of toxicity and a complete absence of odor.

As for the scope of application, ferrous sulfate is successfully used both in horticulture and in medicine or even in industry. And it is also useful in the manufacture of various items of clothing - paint or ink is often prepared from it, with which all kinds of fabrics are subsequently dyed.

Pros and cons

There are many advantages of ferrous sulfate: it has an excellent restorative effect, plays an important role in the processes of chlorophyll formation, which are extremely important for vegetation, is quickly and effortlessly washed off with water, and also effectively and efficiently destroys all kinds of microorganisms and fungal infections that are dangerous for plants in the shortest possible time.: iron vitriol in every possible way prevents their reproduction and subsequent damage to plant cells!

Iron vitriol is not devoid of some drawbacks - if you ignore the observance of its proportions with water, garden and horticultural crops can sometimes get fatal burns for them. And the maximum period of validity of a freshly prepared composition usually does not exceed two weeks.

How to apply?

In horticulture, this substance is most often used on calcareous or saline soils. And in most cases, solutions are prepared on its basis, which are subsequently used for spraying or for watering plants.

To prepare a preventive composition for fungal ailments, three hundred grams of ferrous sulfate are dissolved in ten liters of water. The finished product is sprayed not only with trees with bushes, but also the upper soil layer.

If you dilute a pound of ferrous sulfate in a bucket of water, it will not be difficult to get an excellent remedy for the treatment of spots, powdery mildew, scab or gray rot - in this case, salvage spraying is carried out every two weeks. The same proportions are used for the operational control of various insects (apple sucker, as well as cabbage scoop, aphids, etc.) and their larvae - both the vegetation itself and the tree bark are sprayed with the resulting solution. However, this should be done either before bud break, or in the fall, after the plants have shed their foliage. And attacked by infectious chlorosis (iron deficiency often leads to yellowing of the leaves), plant leaves are treated with a solution of weak concentration, and for best results it is recommended to add a little citric acid to it. Such treatments are carried out on an ongoing basis until the leaves are renewed.

For treatment from lichens or mosses, four hundred grams of the drug are taken for every ten liters of water - this solution is sprayed not only with trees with shrubs and all kinds of plants, but also paths with pebbles, and even lawn grass! And in order to disinfect the damaged parts of tree trunks, one hundred grams of the drug is dissolved in a liter of clean water (it must have room temperature). By the way, some summer residents use ferrous sulfate very successfully as an excellent disinfectant for cesspools!

It is quite permissible to use the valuable substance as a fertilizer - the easily soluble form of iron included in its composition contributes to its excellent assimilation by growing crops! In this case, plant nutrition can be both root and foliar. In the first case, ferrous sulfate is usually introduced during digging, and before starting it, it is recommended to combine it with pre-prepared compost. As for the consumption, no more than one hundred grams of the drug is used for every ten kilograms. And for foliar dressing, ten liters of water are combined with ten grams of ferrous sulfate, then everything is thoroughly mixed and immediately started spraying. Cucumbers with tomatoes, cabbage and some other vegetables respond especially well to such dressings, so you should not deny them this small but extremely healthy pleasure!
