Many bulbous flowers have a delicate character and are sent indoors for the winter. But some plants have a stronger hardening, remaining in the ground in the cold season. These include tulips, daffodils, crocuses. What happens to them in the second half of winter?
Bulbous in the beds
A feature of bulbous plants wintering in the ground is that they form their flower shoots last year. Planted in August-September, flower shoots can reach the soil surface during the autumn months. And already at the end of winter, on the soft ground, you can see seedlings peeking out in warm weather. Therefore, when visiting a country house, you need to carefully bypass areas with flower beds, so as not to accidentally break a delicate sprout.
When the shoot is still very small, it is not afraid of the return of frost. In this phase, bulbs do not die at low temperatures. The sprout may turn red, but will not die.
Bulbous forcing
Bulbous flowers are renowned for their rapid reproduction. In a couple of years, you can acquire fresh planting material, but for children there is not always enough space for a new flower bed. And those who in the fall, even after sharing the bulbs with their like-minded people, were left with planting material in their hands, had the opportunity to prepare their extra tulips, hyacinths, lilies of the valley for winter distillation. So the time has come to interrupt the dormant period of boxes with onions left dug in the trenches.
As a rule, frosts grow stronger in the second half of winter. But in order not to overcool the bulbs, the weather can be turned to your advantage by starting to remove the casing layer from the boxes at noon on a sunny day. The shelter must be removed carefully, because under it delicate seedlings also begin to grow into growth. The box is immediately hidden in a bag or wrapped in newspapers to reduce the effect of temperature differences.
Do not immediately bring the bulbs into a heated room. It is advisable to keep them cool for several hours, where the thermometer is just above 0 ° C.
Conditions for each type of bulbous are also slightly different. Mouse hyacinth and tulips in the first week are kept in a bright room at a temperature of + 15 … + 16 ° С. Then, before the formation of the bud, it is raised to a level of + 18 … + 20 ° С. After that, it is again reduced to the original value. This will help get a taller stem and lengthen the bud. By the way, the optimal height of a tulip before forcing is 6 cm long. In addition, a good indicator is the palpable feeling of the flower bud between the closed leaves.
Crocuses are put on forcing at lower temperatures - about + 6 … + 8 ° С. If the thermometer rises above the + 10 ° C mark, the plant will delight you with the excellent growth of the leaf mass, but you can not wait for the appearance of the bud under such conditions.
The lily of the valley set for distillation is kept in the dark until the plant becomes approximately 10 cm in height. The distillation temperature is fundamentally different from that required for tulips and crocuses. To enjoy the beauty of snow-white bells, it must be provided with warmth not lower than + 25 ° С.
Bulb care for forcing
Forced plants are in dire need of moisture. Therefore, irrigation is carried out abundantly and often - at least once a day. Moistening is performed so that water does not get on the leaves of the plants, otherwise it will create favorable conditions for the development of fungal infection. High humidity in the room also leads to this. Therefore, you must not forget to ventilate the room. If all precautions are taken, and the temperature regime is maintained at the proper level, you can expect flowering of lilies of the valley and crocuses after two weeks. Tulips will need a little less than a month for this.
