Already in May, summer residents are content with the flowering of lilacs. The scent is fragrant throughout the garden, and bright purple or white blossoms attract the attention of others. In the garden, the cultivation of lilacs has long been commonplace. It is rare that a site can be found without the presence of this wonderful shrub
However, experienced gardeners are constantly working to create new and new recommendations that make it easier to care for and grow lilacs. With proper and complete care, the shrub will delight the summer resident with lush abundant flowering every year.
Lilac belongs to the olive family. About three dozen different species can be found in this genus. Most of them were bred by breeders specifically for garden cultivation. Therefore, in the wild, such plants cannot be found. As for the varieties of lilac, at the moment there are more than two thousand of them.
Gardeners and summer residents love lilacs, first of all, for its luxurious appearance. But, in addition, the plant has a pleasant aroma. Lilac inflorescences are presented in the form of brushes or panicles. The flowering period for this crop begins very quickly - May and June. It is difficult to say anything exact about the duration of flowering. Since the variety of the flower culture is of great importance here.
Lilac is a plant that is resistant to frost and temperature drops. In addition, its popularity can be compared with a mock-orange. Lilac is characterized by a dense deciduous crown. Leaf blooming occurs in early spring. In the fall, lilacs can last until the first frost. In temperate climates, common lilacs are most often grown. She can see the shape of the leaves in the form of hearts. But in other varieties, the leaves resemble a geometric shape of an ellipse.
The lilac flower has a corolla in its structure, which has the shape of a tubular funnel with four petals. Such inflorescences are collected in lush paniculate elements that are up to twenty centimeters long. It is interesting that the flowers of this plant do not fall for a very long time. Therefore, a pleasant and expressive aroma is kept in the garden.
Lilac care
For planting lilac bushes, you should choose only very carefully lit places. In principle, lilacs will grow in shaded areas, but in this case the bushes will be elongated, and the flowers will appear in the smallest possible amount. When choosing a place to grow this crop, you should pay special attention to areas protected from strong wind currents. Although it is worth remembering that almost always in the first few years after planting, the lilac bush breaks down from the winds or snow that falls in winter. In no case should a plant be planted in a swampy area, as it is flooded in the spring and autumn seasons. If the summer cottage is located in a lowland, then you should plant a shrub on a mound sprinkled with earth, which will also need to be surrounded by a wall of stones for backing up. Hungarian lilacs can be planted on very damp soil. It tolerates excess moisture well.
As for the soil, it does not have to be fertile to grow lilacs. However, if you want to please yourself with the abundant and beautiful flowering of lilacs, then you should pick up land with moderate moisture levels, excellent fertility and good drainage. Preference should be given to neutral or slightly acidic soil.
The most favorable time for planting lilacs is the last summer month or September. If the shrubs are planted in the garden in a group, then a distance of two or three meters must be maintained between them. Planting pits should be fifty centimeters deep. The diameter of the hole should be exactly the same. In the case of lilac planting on sandy soil, it is required to fill the planting holes with a special mixture containing humus, superphosphate and wood ash.
The planting depth of the shrub should be selected in such a way that the neck of the root system is at the level of the upper soil layer. During the planting process, the crown should be trimmed somewhat (usually into two or three buds). The roots should be branched, and if too long root processes are present, then they should be slightly shortened by cutting off some part. The plant itself is placed in the central part of the hole, after which the root system is evenly distributed, and humus is placed in the hole itself. The next step is soil compaction and abundant watering.
