Fragrant Osmanthus

An evergreen shrub grows slowly, generously filling the space around it with a fruity-jasmine aroma. Since time immemorial, its flowers have been used in China as an additive to tea leaves, or they have been used to prepare an independent aromatic drink from them. Plants are resistant to high and low temperatures

Rod Osmanthus

Evergreen shrubs and trees of the genus Osmanthus, which is part of the small Olive family, are in no hurry to grow, enjoying life in this world all year round. They grow up to a maximum of 5 meters in height, not showing off their growth, but delighting with decorative foliage and fragrant flowering.

Some parts of the plant are similar to plants that are related to the Olive family. For example, the whole leathery leaves of Osmanthus are similar to the leaves of the Olive tree, and the panicle inflorescences of small white tubular flowers fill the air with a scent reminiscent of the scent of Jasmine.

Inside the egg-shaped drupe is a nut.

Growing

Osmanthus can grow in full sun or partial shade. It is important that the landing site is protected from the winds.

They tolerate temperature fluctuations, but prolonged frosts are fatal for them. When growing Osmanthus in cold climatic zones, they are sheltered for the winter.

They can grow on any well-drained soil, better on slightly acidic, worse on alkaline. When planting, the soil is fertilized with compost or rotted manure.

The plant is drought-resistant. Watering is required only with prolonged drought. In the spring-summer period, complex fertilizer is added to the water for irrigation every three to four decades. Osmanthus grown in flower pots requires regular watering.

Cutting shrubs reduces the abundance of flowering, so only hedges are trimmed. The haircut is carried out in April. To maintain decorativeness, damaged and dry branches are removed.

Reproduction

In July, lignified or semi-lignified cuttings are harvested and planted for rooting in a mixture of sand and peat, taken in equal quantities. Cuttings that have released roots are transplanted into personal containers and sent to an unheated room until spring. In the spring, they are moved to the open air, finally planted in open ground after a couple of years.

In addition, they propagate by rooting cuttings, or (less often) by sowing seeds.

Enemies

It is affected by fungi and worms.
