Phacelia campanulate (lat. Phacelia campanularia) - a flowering plant; a representative of the Phacelia genus of the Aquifolia family. Southern California is considered to be the homeland of the species. It is actively used by flower growers from Russia and European countries to decorate personal backyard plots.
Characteristics of culture
Bell-shaped phacelia is represented by low-growing annual plants not exceeding 25 cm in height. It is characterized by erect, highly branched reddish stems. The stems, in turn, are crowned with lobed, alternate, bluish, green foliage. The edges of the leaves are uneven, serrated, have a brownish border, which gives the plants a special attractiveness.
The flowers of the phacelia in question, as the name implies, are bell-shaped. They do not exceed 3-4 cm in diameter, have a rich blue color, possibly the presence of darker spots at the base. Flowers are collected in moderately dense racemose inflorescences of 10-12 pieces. Flowering begins in the second or third decade of June and lasts for 1, 5-2 months.
Features of growing and care
Bell-shaped phacelia can hardly be called a whimsical culture, but for abundant flowering and active growth of green mass, it is important to provide the plant with proper conditions and care. The location is preferably sunny or with diffused light, protected from cold northerly winds. Soils are desirable nutritious, light, moist.
You should not try to grow a crop on heavy clay, swampy and saline soils in dense shade or lowlands with stagnant precipitation or cold air. In such areas, plants will stagnate, often get sick, and are likely to die. It is possible to grow in areas with poor soils, but subject to the introduction of rotted compost or humus.
The main requirement is abundant and regular watering, of course, without waterlogging. Lack of watering promises meager flowering. In addition, improper watering and intense heat provoke short flowering (less than a month). Also, phacelia bell-shaped needs systematic removal of weeds, careful loosening of the soil, mulching against weeds is acceptable.
Bell-shaped phacelia is grown by seed method. Seeds, by the way, remain viable for about 4 years, but only if stored at 5-10C, for example, in a refrigerator. At higher temperatures, seeds lose their germination faster. Sowing for seedlings is carried out in the second decade of May directly into the open ground under a film, which acts as protection against night frosts.
The seeds of the bell-shaped phacelia are small, they do not need a deepening, it is enough to push the seed into the soil with a toothpick, sprinkle it a little with soil and water. With the appearance of 2-3 true leaves on the shoots, it is important to thin out, leaving a distance of at least 10-15 cm between the plants. Transplantation to another place is possible, but very carefully so as not to damage the fragile roots of the plant.

Phacelia - A Pantry For Bees And More
In recent years, beekeeping has experienced a new revival. Many people start bee colonies at their dachas and get their own high-quality honey. Because they want to eat a natural product, and not fakes from random sellers in the market. To get a good "harvest" of sweet honey, it is necessary to sow herbs in the area that emit a lot of nectar and attract bees. One of these plants is the irreplaceable phacelia
