Kolpakovsky tulip is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the genus Tulip of the Liliaceae family. In Latin, its name will sound like this:

Tulipa kolpakowskiana … The representative of this type of tulip is named after the Russian general from infantry, one of the greatest figures in the conquest of Central Asia - Gerasim Alekseevich Kolpakovsky, who was an honorary member of the geographical society of Russia and provided great assistance to various kinds of botanical expeditions.

Area

For the first time, this type of plant was discovered in the vicinity of the city of Verny, and was described in 1877 by a botanist, scientist, gardener Eduard Ludwigovich Regel. In the wild, Kolpakovsky's tulip chooses clay or gravelly soils of mountain slopes, steppes and desert plains of Kazakhstan. The territory of the considered tulip species extends along the Dzungar Alatau mountain range, the Zailiyskiy Alatau ridge, on the slopes of the Chu-Ili mountains and on the heights of the Kyrgyz ridge.

Characteristics of culture

The considered species of tulips is a herbaceous bulbous plant that rises about 35 centimeters above the ground. On a dense, leafless, dark green peduncle, there are 3 to 5 basal leaves of the same shade. The leaves have a linear, elongated, bent outward shape and a wavy tapered edge.

A single drooping goblet inflorescence reaches a diameter of about 5 centimeters. The perianth petals have a bent, pointed shape along the edges and a significant difference in size, the outer ones are larger and strongly curved, the inner ones are short and straight. The texture of the petals is silky, shiny, the color is bright yellow with a dark purple spot at the base.

In the center of the inflorescence there is a bunch of shortened filiform stamens and anthers of a rich yellow hue. A miniature oval-shaped bulb grows no more than 2 centimeters in diameter, completely covered with hard scales of maroon or black color. The fruit is a small, tricuspid, elongated, green box; in an adult, fully developed plant, the number of seeds is from 150 to 200 pieces.

The period of active flowering of this flower culture begins in the second decade of April, and lasts about two to three weeks. At the beginning of June, the plant enters the fruiting phase and this is the best period for collecting seeds and dividing the bulbs.

The subtleties of growing

Kolpakovsky's tulip is a fairly persistent and unpretentious perennial plant, which is in great demand among florists, gardeners and landscape designers. Thanks to the bright color of the presented species of plants, you can create a unique design for both a large territory and a small summer cottage. Since the species of tulips in question belongs to the group of early flowering plants, it is a unique pleasure to observe their active colorful flowering after a cold winter.

But even despite the modesty of this type of plants in terms of care, it is necessary to create the most favorable conditions for their comfortable growth. Kolpakovsky's tulip, like all representatives of this plant species, loves to soak up the soft sunlight, therefore, when choosing a place for planting, it is necessary to take this fact into account, it does not die in the shade, but it blooms sluggishly and for a short time.

After the place is determined, it is necessary to prepare a fertile, slightly acidic, light-dense soil, fertilized with organic nutrients. It is advisable to water the plant early in the morning before sunrise or late in the evening with the onset of dusk, so that the soil has time to absorb the liquid to a depth of at least 10 centimeters before it evaporates.
