Description

The piri piri pepper is an African variety of chili peppers. By the way, in African countries it is called not only Piri Piri, but also Peli Peli or Peri Peri - this is due to the dialects of the inhabitants of those parts of Africa from where this hot pepper was brought.

Externally, piri-piri pepper is an elegant pepper bush, the height of which ranges from forty-five to one hundred and twenty centimeters. The narrow leaves of this culture reach from four to seven centimeters in length, and the length of its small cylindrical fruits usually does not exceed two and a half centimeters. The average weight of one pepper is approximately thirty-five grams.

Until ripening, piri-piri peppers are characterized by a rich greenish color, and then they gradually turn into bright red or even purple tones. Ripe fruits boast a very strong pungency.

High-quality peppers should have an evenly colored skin, without wrinkles, dents, dark spots or any other damage.

Where grows

Piri piri pepper was first discovered about four centuries ago by the Portuguese, and its more exact origin is currently unknown to mankind. From the African continent, the Portuguese brought piri piri pepper to the European continent, and from there it got to numerous states of South America.

In Africa, piri piri pepper can be found in many countries - from Ethiopia to Uganda (in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, etc.). And the main suppliers of this spicy vegetable are the former Portuguese colonies - Angola and Mozambique.

Usage

On the basis of piri-piri peppers, a spicy sauce of the same name is prepared - this sauce is still one of the most refined and rich seasonings for cooking grilled chicken, beloved by many. By the way, in the process of frying when using such a sauce, poultry meat not only acquires a very piquant taste and amazing aroma, but also loses its characteristic chicken smell.

The modern food industry is actively producing a huge number of a wide variety of hot sauces based on piri piri peppers. The Mama Africa series is especially popular - these South African sauces are sold in stores like hotcakes. And connoisseurs of pungent tastes assure that, in comparison with these truly vigorous additives, the famous Tabasco is the most delicate sweetness.
