Alpine prince (lat. Atragene alpina) - a representative of the Knyazhik clan of the Buttercup family. Natural habitats are shrubs and forests located on rocky cliffs and along river banks. A native of Central Europe. It is now widely cultivated in many European and Asian countries with a temperate climate. In Russia, it is a little-known species, and is cultivated only on personal household plots. Often the Alpine prince, like other types of prince, is confused with clematis. And in fact, the plants have the same botanical characteristics and differ only in the structure of the flowers.
Characteristics of culture
Alpine duchess is a woody liana, the length of which varies from 1 to 3 m. Plants cling to the support with long petioles, twisting as they grow. The leaves are trifoliate or dvazhdytrychatye, consist of pointed leaves serrate-toothed along the edge. The flowers are broadly bell-shaped, violet-blue or blue with an azure tint, sit on thin pedicels. Sepals ovate-elliptical, pointed, pubescent along the edge. Petals are small, spatulate. Flowering occurs in May-June, numerous fruits, collected in the head, ripen in August-September.

Growing conditions
The Alpine prince prefers shady areas, has a negative attitude to the action of direct sunlight and a strong squally wind. Despite the fact that the alpine prince is an unpretentious plant, it is recommended to grow it on light, loose, fertile, water and air permeable, well-drained soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction. Loamy soils are optimal. The winter hardiness of the species under consideration is average; in the European part of Russia, it does not need shelter for the winter.
Reproduction and planting subtleties
The Alpine prince is propagated by seeds, green and lignified cuttings, layering and dividing the bush. Sowing seeds is carried out in October in seedling boxes indoors or in heated greenhouses. Grown plants in open ground are produced in spring. The depth of the planting holes depends on the degree of development of the root system and the size of the plants.
Before planting, compost, rotted manure or humus are introduced into the holes. It is also necessary to feed the soil with granular superphosphate and wood ash. Acidic soils require preliminary liming. Crushed stone, vermiculite or broken brick can be used as a drainage layer. The drainage layer is 10-15 cm.
When planting plants along the wall of a house or near a fence, a distance of 30-40 cm is observed. The distance between the plants should be at least 70-100 cm. After planting, the soil is watered abundantly with warm water and mulched. The root collar is deepened by 5-10 cm, for tall plants - by 10-12 cm.
Care
There is nothing remarkable in the care: standard watering, loosening, weed removal, top dressing and preventive treatments against pests and diseases. During the drought period, watering is carried out at least 2-3 times a week. Top dressing for the culture plays an important role. The first feeding is carried out in early spring, the second - during the budding period, the third - after flowering, the fourth - after pruning. With the onset of autumn, wood ash is added under the culture in the amount of 2-3 glasses. For the winter, the soil in the near-trunk zone is mulched with sawdust, vermiculite or peat and covered with spruce branches.
Usage
Alpine prince is used for vertical gardening. With their hanging garlands of leaves and beautiful flowers, they will decorate any gazebo, fence and other outbuildings.
