Deytion purple (lat.deutzia purpurascens) - flowering shrub; species of the genus Deutzia family Hortensiae. Distributed in the southwestern regions of China. It is used infrequently in landscaping, although it has quite a few forms and varieties.
Characteristics of culture
Purple deytion is a shrub up to 2 m high with thin branches covered with brown bark. Annual shoots are poorly pubescent. Leaves are green, whole, simple, petiolate, opposite, pubescent, broadly lanceolate or ovate, thin, pointed at the ends, finely serrate along the edge, up to 5 cm long. Flowers of medium size, pubescent, collected in loose semi-umbellate inflorescences, consisting of 5-12 flowers … Sepals are purple, petals are purple-pink. By crossing the purple deutzia and the graceful deytion, a deutzia x rosea hybrid was obtained. The hybrid is represented by spectacular flowering shrubs up to 1 m high with dark green foliage and small pink flowers.
Among gardeners, a variety of purple action called Kalmiiflora is popular. The variety is represented by small deciduous shrubs with a straight wide crown and arched branches. Differs in relatively fast growth. The flowers are whitish-pink on the inside and bright pink on the outside, up to 2 cm in diameter, collected in vertical shields. Flowers form on last year's shoots. The bloom is profuse, begins in June and lasts about 3 weeks. The variety is not durable, but resistant to gas and smoke, easily withstands urban conditions. Suitable for growing in central Russia, but with the condition of shelter for the winter, because the shrubs cannot withstand temperatures below -20C.
Growing features
Purple deytion will get its mesmerizing appearance in full with a sufficient level of lighting, humidity and care. High-quality drainage is important for the species under consideration, because plants will not tolerate salt and excess moisture in the soil. Negative action refers to heavy clay and strongly acidic soils. Optimal loam with a neutral or slightly acidic pH reaction. Most species of the genus Deutzia are non-resistant, but even after strong freezing of the shoots, they quickly recover and bloom, the same rule applies to the action of purple.
The species in question is extremely unpretentious to growing conditions, but rather picky about care. The flowering of the culture and the activity of growth depend on it. One of the most important shrub care procedures is pruning. During the season, it is enough to carry out two pruning: the first in early spring, the second after flowering. By autumn, the plants will have formed new shoots, which will bloom the next year. Having skipped one pruning, the shrubs will also give a good growth, but in this case the flowering will move to the periphery of the crown.
In order to prevent severe frosts from harming the plants, they are insulated in autumn. Spruce branches, kraft paper, lutrasil and other airtight materials can be used as insulation. Young plants with a height of less than one meter are bent to the ground and fixed with wooden staples; it is not recommended to use metal wire. Do not bend down actions over 1 m in height, otherwise the branches may break. It is enough to wrap them with lutrasil, and cover the foot with peat or fallen leaves. In winter, snow is thrown on the bushes. In the spring, the shelters are removed and the mulch is removed. It is important not to miss the moment, otherwise the shrubs will begin to vomit, which will negatively affect their health.
Placing in the garden
As you know, purple action is photophilous, but will not tolerate direct sunlight. Diffused sunlight is optimal. If actions are part of compositions with other ornamental shrubs and trees, the latter should not overlap the former. Lack of light will affect flowering and growth. Tall plants should not be placed in the foreground, it is better to take this place for actions. The species in question is beautiful in union with both deciduous and coniferous crops. Annual and perennial flowers will also complement compositions with actions.
