Scherzer's anthurium (lat. Anthurium scherzerianum) - a representative of the genus Anthurium of the Aroid family. An evergreen perennial herb. Typical habitats in nature are mountain rainforests and slopes. It is found mainly in the Republic of Costa Rica, located in Central America and bordering Panama and Nicaragua. The species is actively used in home floriculture. It is very attractive due to its spectacular cover of rich orange or red-orange color and swirling cob.

Characteristics of culture

Scherzer's anthurium is represented by perennial herbaceous plants with short stems and numerous thin roots. The foliage, in turn, as in most species, is prostrate, thick, linear, elliptical or lanceolate, obtuse or wedge-shaped at the base, matte on both sides, and has long cylindrical petioles. A convex vein is located in the middle of the leaf, the rest were barely noticeable, located at an angle of 45 degrees.

The inflorescences of the Scherzer anthurium are vertical, equal in length to the foliage, and have a very long peduncle. The coverlet is thickened, red-orange or bright orange, elliptical or oval in shape, heart-shaped at the base. The ear is pale, orangeish or red, no more than 8 cm long, as a rule, narrowed towards the top, always twisted, which gives the plant incredible attractiveness. The fruits are represented by oval berries of red or orange color, which bear no more than 4 seeds. Often more than 70-90 berries ripen on one adult plant.

Subtleties of crop care

Anthurium Scherzer is quite whimsical in care. Regular and moderate watering is very important for the plant, especially during the period of active growth. It is impossible to allow the earthen coma to dry out, just like waterlogging. It is recommended to use separated, filtered water. It is equally important to monitor the condition of the pot pan, water must not be left in it, otherwise the roots will begin to rot from dampness, as a result, the plant can get sick and die. Scherzer's anthurium is good for systematic spraying. This manipulation can be carried out using a spray bottle.

The species in question is extremely picky about feeding. Complex mineral fertilizers should be applied at least once every 2 weeks. You can use ready-made mixtures for flowering house plants. They are presented in a large assortment in garden chains and shops. Organics will not harm the plants. You can use rotted manure and humus. They need to be applied in early spring.

Breeding features

Most often, anthuriums, including the species in question, are propagated in a vegetative way, to be more precise by division. The strips are cut from adult plants from the rooted side shoots with a knife. Delenki must necessarily have a part of the rhizome, otherwise they will not root and die. It is advisable to process the sections with coal crushed into dust, otherwise bacterial infections cannot be avoided. Division is best done in spring, but not in hot weather.

Also, Scherzer's anthurium is propagated by seed, since today you can find a huge variety of varieties on sale. That's right, because this species is actively involved in the breeding work of European and American breeders. The seeds are sown in a mixture of peat and vermiculite, taken in a 1: 1 ratio. To prevent moisture evaporation and achieve quick emergence, it is recommended to cover the surface of the substrate with sphagnum moss.
