Amaranth Brown (lat. Amaranthus brownii) - a rare representative of the Amaranth genus of the Amaranth family. It is endemic because it grows in a limited area, in particular in Hawaii. The number of plants is limited, today the species is recognized as endangered.
A bit of history
This representative of the Amaranth clan was discovered back in 1923, but its description was carried out 8 years later. The species received its name in honor of the famous American scientist and explorer named Forest Brown. In nature, Brown amaranth is found on rocks and sea shores. Today the species is under protection, and it received the protected status relatively recently - in 19996, at the same time it was included in the Red Book.
Characteristics of culture
Brown amaranth is represented by annual herbaceous plants not exceeding 50-90 cm in height, there are also undersized specimens, their height varies from 25 to 50 cm. The stem of the species under consideration is straight, branched or simple, crowned with regular, linear, narrow foliage. The flowers are small, green, collected in large paniculate inflorescences, which are inherent in all representatives of the Amaranth genus.
Amaranth Brown fruits are capsules containing small ovoid seeds of dark red color. It should be noted that, unlike other species, Brown amaranth does not open its fruits during ripening and does not self-seed, therefore their number is limited.
Usage
The species is not used in culture, since it was not possible to grow plants even under laboratory conditions. More precisely, none of the tested specimens survived to adulthood, the reasons for this feature were not identified. Scientists and breeders are still experimenting with growing Brown amaranth, but so far unsuccessfully.
But it is impossible to underestimate the view. Not only is it highly decorative, it also carries a lot of useful properties. It is useful against many ailments of humanity, from the common cold to cancerous tumors. Previously, it was used to prepare lotions for insect bites, open wounds, burns, small scars and even bedsores. They took it both internally and externally for the treatment of cancer. Surprisingly, it is also useful against inflammation and irritation of the oral cavity.
In general, Brown's amaranth is an excellent tonic and restorative plant, it can handle constipation, cirrhosis of the liver, jaundice, cholecystitis, heart and vascular diseases (including ischemic disease, myocarditis, angina pectoris, etc.), diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (duodenal ulcers intestines and stomach, enterocolitis, etc.), diabetic angiopathy and other diseases that doctors tirelessly struggle with.
There is very little information about the peculiarities of growing amaranth Brown, but among the representatives of the genus Amaranth there are quite a few worthy specimens that can decorate the garden and give it an incredibly mesmerizing look.
