How to choose the right seedlings? What to look for when choosing? We offer you tips to help you avoid mistakes and make the right choice in the buying process.

Do you want to plant a garden or just plant a few fruit trees that will delight you and your loved ones with delicious, healthy and beautiful fruits? To do this, you need to purchase seedlings. But buying planting material is not as easy as it seems at first glance

At any garden fair you will find an abundance of species and varieties of fruit trees. How can we choose what we need from this variety, because every seller praises his product? How not to buy too much? First of all, analyze your strengths and capabilities. After all, each plant will need a certain area, care, watering. Remember that your site is not rubber, and you are not a super-hero who can take care of plants around the clock.

Next, think about what types of fruit trees you would like to see on your site? And be sure to make a list. Then you will definitely not get too much. Now you can go for seedlings. And then the question arises: where is it better to buy seedlings? The best place to purchase planting material is in specialized nurseries or breeding institutes, where each variety is precisely defined. You will definitely not get a surprise from the trees purchased there in the form of fruits of the wrong variety or type. You can go to a specialized garden fair. But, in any case, do not buy seedlings on the road, as some enterprising people often try to sell tree branches from their plots. So in the best case, you will get low-quality planting material, in the worst case, you will simply "throw your money down the drain."

And one more tip: no matter how much you like the southern heat-loving plant, do not rush to buy it. First, think about whether it will fit into your garden plot? Secondly, every plant that you purchase must necessarily be adapted to the local climate, otherwise it will die in the very first winter.

So, we have decided on the quantity, varieties and place of purchase of planting material. Now let's move on to the most important thing: the choice of a seedling, since the future success in growing our fruit trees largely depends on it. As the old proverb says, "Do not wait for a good tribe from a bad seed."

The main signs of a healthy seedling:

1. The trunk (bole) of the seedling should be straight, without visible damage to the bark. By the way, the bark itself should be smooth, slightly glossy, shiny.

2. When choosing planting material, it is necessary to carefully examine the roots of the plant. The root system of the planting material should be fresh, not frost-bitten and not dried. The length of the rhizome should be at least 30 centimeters, because the more long and branched roots a seedling has, the faster the tree will take root.

In addition, the root cut should be white. A change in color indicates that the root is either dry or frozen. Please note that this seedling is not suitable for planting. Also, you need to inspect the root system for the presence of various swellings, growths, so as not to acquire diseased planting material.

3. If you buy a seedling in the spring, then look at the crown of the tree: the buds should be "full", alive, pecking of leaves is allowed. But, in no case should there be full-fledged leaves, since such a plant in 90% of cases does not take root and dies.

If you buy a seedling in the fall, then it is advisable to cut off the leaves from the plant immediately, only very carefully so as not to damage the axillary bud. This must be done in order to prevent moisture evaporation. For the period of transportation of the seedling, its root system must be laid so that it does not break and does not receive any mechanical damage. You can gently wrap the root of the plant with paper or moss.

In the next article we will talk about the correct planting of seedlings in the ground.
