Outwardly, cordilina is very similar to dracaena and it is easy to confuse them. This is not surprising, since they both belong to the lily family. And long leaves collected in a lush bunch are their distinctive feature
Cordilina for warm rooms
Cordilina is interesting in that among its varieties for indoor floriculture there are such specimens that are more suitable for warm apartments, while others are grown in cool rooms. And although cordilina is called a southern plant, it takes root well in cold climates.
For lovers of a warmer microclimate in their homes, it is advised to start an apical cordilina. It is also called the tree of luck. Due to the lignified stem, it resembles a small tree, although it is called a semi-shrub. At home, this variety grows up to 2 m tall. Can also be grown as a garden plant.
The apical cordilina has wider leaves than its sisters - about 10 cm. The shape of the leaves is elongated, up to 80 cm long. A deep vein runs along the leaf, which divides it into two parts. The color of the leaves can be very interesting shades - not only green, but also crimson, purple. There are variegated forms.
Cordilina, which suits cool air
For those who love fresh coolness in the house more, it is recommended to opt for Australian cordilina. In contrast to the apical, this flower has thin, saber-shaped leaves, the length of which can reach 1 m. The color of the foliage depends on the variety: it can be bright green, with yellow longitudinal stripes, with a red tint.
The young plant nests in a pot like a squat rosette. But as it grows, the trunk begins to appear, and the foliage already rises on its top with a thick sultan. In addition to Australian in cool rooms, crowded cordilina grows well and develops. This variety also has a wide leaf of green, red, bronze color. Common to these plants is a rather inconspicuous flowering against the backdrop of a chic armful of foliage. On the paniculate inflorescence, miniature buds are formed, which dissolve petals of purple, white flowers. Some species have a pleasant aroma.
Cordilina care
Regardless of temperature preferences, you need to keep cordilina in a well-lit room. However, it should not be left in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. If a place suitable for the pot was found only opposite the window, it is necessary to arrange shading in the bright sun of the cordiline. If you do not adhere to this precaution, soon spots will begin to appear on the leaves, which, as they expand, lead to death. In addition, frequent airing of the room is useful for the flower. However, it is impossible for it to fall into a draft - it will react by blackening the edges of the sheet plate. And it was also noticed that in the company of other flowers, cordilina develops worse - she likes to solo.
On summer days, the pot can be moved to loggias and balconies, to open verandas, to front gardens. Owners of backyard plots can plant a plant in their flower garden for this period.
The peculiarity of watering is that in the summer months it is moistened twice a day, in the morning and evening hours, but with a moderate amount of water. But during the day you need to spray the flower. In addition, fertilizing is carried out in the spring-summer period. In the winter months, the frequency of watering is reduced and no spraying is carried out. It is better to wash the leaves at this time of the year. The procedure is performed with a sponge, a damp cloth so that water does not accumulate at the base of the leaves, causing decay of growth points. The plant will report that the air around the flower is too dry by blackening the leaves. This symptom also signals a lack of soil moisture.
Yellowing of the lower leaves is the norm - they give way to new greenery. But when the whole crown acquires an uncharacteristic yellow shade of the variety, this may indicate that the microclimate in the room is too dry for a flower.
Reproduction of cordilina
Cordilina can be grown from seeds, propagated by root shoots, stem cuttings. An interesting feature of the plant is that when sowing seeds, you get a plant with green leaves, and when grafting a variety, it will repeat the color of the mother plant.
To obtain a rooted stalk, the cut off top is placed in a vessel of water. A soil mixture for a flower is prepared from deciduous and greenhouse land with the addition of rotted manure. The transplant is performed every two years. The signal for transplanting is the exposure of the roots in the pot.
