Very often, when growing celery, you have to face a number of problems that can completely deprive you of your harvest. The best solution would be to comply with the necessary rules for caring for celery.
Celery is appreciated not only for its taste and valuable aroma, but also for its healing properties. Celery needs soil with enough humus. Clayy moist soils are contraindicated for this culture; on such soils, the plant simply cannot develop and function normally.
It should be noted that fresh manure has a negative impact on this crop. In this case, the best solution seems to be the introduction of compost or rotted manure in the spring season.
Before planting, complex fertilizers must be applied to the soil. During the summer season, you can fertilize with nitrogen fertilizers two or three times. Celery will yield excellent yields on neutral soils. In the garden where celery will be grown, in the spring it will be possible to grow, for example, lettuce.
It should be noted that it is permissible to grow celery after a number of other crops. The only exceptions are parsley, carrots, dill and parsnips. In places where these crops grew, you can plant celery only after four years.
Sowing this crop in pots should be very early, around the first half of March. Celery seeds should be heated in a high temperature bath for about fifteen minutes. After that, you should water the seeds with cold water. The seed box should be placed on a windowsill with sufficient light. After three weeks, shoots will appear, while the temperature should be at least eighteen degrees Celsius. Plantings should also be mulched with organic materials.
Very often summer residents make an important mistake even when planting: it is unacceptable to deeply deepen the seedlings. Celery will grow extremely unpleasant in this situation. Therefore, it is very important to remember that the growth point of this crop when planting should coincide with the soil level.
Celery needs moist soil, only in this case you can get a high-quality, tasty and juicy harvest. This crop should be watered not only in the summer, but also in August, and even in September. Such watering will provide the best conditions for plant development.
Celery should not be planted very early, because at the very beginning of its development, this vegetable will be extremely susceptible to sudden changes in temperature and a cold snap. Under such conditions, the plant will simply be unsuitable for food. For this reason, celery can only be planted when the possibility of frost is completely excluded. However, it should be noted that autumn frosts are not terrible for celery.
It is very important that you cannot cut off all the leaves of root celery. Indeed, in the absence of leaves, a root crop can never grow. It is permissible to pinch off the lower leaves, but you cannot cut off all the leaves. Harvesting of root crops should be done in late autumn. It is also not recommended to damage the celery peel. Leaves should be dried in a dark place.
There are several ways to store celery. For example, when storing in a cellar, the celery should be covered with sand. You can also leave celery in the beds, covering them with earth and covering them with insulation. Leaves are used as insulation. The upper part of the fruit and the leaves themselves must be left open: this applies not only to the cellar, but also to the beds themselves.
The most dangerous diseases for celery will be scab and septoria. With septoria, a sharp decrease in yield occurs, and the leaves themselves will be covered with rusty spots. As for the scab, then spots will appear on root crops, which will lead to the fact that they cannot be stored for a long time. Very often, such diseases occur due to excessive feeding with nitrogen fertilizers. Therefore, it is recommended to observe clearly set fertilizer rates.
