Advice 2. Fertilization, proportions
The fading, slow growth of the grass comes from nutritional deficiencies. Artificial feeding helps to solve the problem. Ideally, it is carried out every month and a half or at least twice a season.
Different formulations are used for spring and autumn feeding. In autumn, potassium should prevail, in spring - nitrogen, it is this element that increases germination and stimulates growth. Phosphorus gives emerald green to the lawn.
For feeding lawns, ready-made mixtures are purchased or any mineral complexes are purchased. They should contain the main components: nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus. Choose options where the ratio of these substances is 4: 2: 1 or 3: 2: 1.
The amount of fertilizer applied per square meter is indicated on the package. This rate should be adjusted based on the condition of the grass and the location of the lawn. If the lawn is in a shady place, less fertilizer is applied than the norm specified in the instructions, in the open sun - more.
In the spring, top dressing is carried out until the grass has begun to grow, the last one a month before frost. Fertilizers are always spread by hand so that the mixture is evenly distributed over the area.
Tip 3. Soil quality
The composition of the soil affects the growth and condition of the grass. If your site is located in places with acidic soil (clay, loam), the lawn will grow poorly, the root system will not be able to fully function and provide food for the green mass. Fertile areas used for lawns change PH over the years, since during the feeding process, nitrogen fertilizers provoke soil oxidation. As a result, bald spots, yellowness, moss appear on the lawn, the blades of grass become thin, pale, and grow slowly.
Test the soil for acidity, if the level is high, take action. Liming is not done simultaneously with the introduction of nitrogen-containing fertilizers. The optimal time for such work is autumn or winter. The frequency of events is not more than once every three years, the treatment of soil that is not prone to acidification is once every 10 years.
For the lawn, ground limestone or dolomite flour is used in proportions of 400-500 g / m2. Wood ash can be used to reduce acidity. Garden lime should not be used for the lawn, as the appearance of the grass will deteriorate. If after treatment the moss growing on the lawn has not disappeared, potassium with manganese is required.
Tip 4. Aeration
Over the years, the root system grows strongly, the density of the sod layer does not allow the earth / roots to "breathe". This leads to stagnation of moisture, the development of fungal / putrefactive phenomena. There are three ways to ensure the flow of air into the soil:
• piercing the ground with a pitchfork 8-10 cm;
• use of an aerator (scarifier);
• use of spiked shoe attachments.
Aeration is carried out on moist soil. Two days before the start of the procedure, the lawn should be shed abundantly. Works are carried out in autumn or spring.
Tip 5. Proper watering
In dry weather, the grass needs regular watering. For this, an automatic system is used to maintain the desired humidity level or a garden hose with fine-grained spray nozzles.
Watering is carried out 2-3 times a week in the morning or in the evening. Sunny areas, after watering, may suffer from midday UV, moisture will quickly evaporate. For active growth, moisturizing should go to a depth of 10-12 cm, which is about 2-3 watering cans per square meter / meter.
