Spring has actively come into its own, and the opening of the garden season is not far off. But there is time to prepare for it, as well as to take preventive measures to protect yourself and loved ones from the invasion of ticks. We share useful tips
Ticks are very dangerous insects. Their bites can cause great trouble and seriously impair health - from fever, headache to paralysis of the body and even death. If the effects of the bite are not promptly cured, the disease can last for years, acquiring side effects - memory problems, joint pain, and panic appear.
Small pests, getting on the skin, stick to it and drink blood. Ticks can hide in feathers of birds, animal hair, in leaves of plants - both weeds and cultivated ones. Their bites are most dangerous from early spring to late summer. To protect yourself and your family from such a misfortune, it is necessary to carry out preventive measures using the following methods:
1. Regular lawn mowing
By mowing the grass, you rid the lawn, it is a breeding ground for ticks that like to nest in tall grass, waiting for prey - people or animals. Especially insects love damp and shady places.
2. Constant garbage collection
It is necessary to remove fallen leaves from the site in a timely manner so that it does not decompose - this is a favorable environment for the breeding of ticks. It is best to process the collected cut grass and leaves in a compost heap - they will make an excellent fertilizer. If you dry out the grass and leaves, you can get an excellent mulch that helps in weed control and keeps the soil moist, which is beneficial for cultivated plants. It is necessary to remove unnecessary garbage from the site and keep the yard clean. Wood waste attracts rodents and ticks.
3. Creation of a barrier for insects
As an artificial border, you can use various materials: dry wood shavings, sand, gravel, sawdust, pouring all this in a thick layer between the garden and the forest.
4. Walking paths that are uncomfortable for walking barefoot
Many people love to walk barefoot along the garden paths on warm summer days. This is very popular with ticks that do not cross paths with rough lining. If the paths on the site are made of gravel or chips, ticks will not be there.
5. Correct keeping of animals
Wild animals are considered the most important carriers of ticks: foxes, hares, deer, etc. Therefore, in areas located near forest park areas, the risk of being bitten by ticks increases. It is not recommended to let in the territory of the garden and vegetable garden wild animals that can carry ticks, as well as infect pets and their owners with a dangerous disease - rabies.
If you plant thorny shrubs around the perimeter of the site, it will be difficult for wild animals to get into the garden. Plants with a strong aroma (for example, lavender, tarragon, cilantro, basil) are a good barrier for animals. The smell of ammonia and mint repels animals well, including insects.
6. Eliminate the appearance of wet places on the site
Shaded and humid areas in the area attract ticks. Therefore, you need to regularly prune trees so that they do not give a lot of shade, and also do not overdo it with watering.
7. Make the area as sunlit as possible
A sunny and dry area is not attractive to ticks. Therefore, most of the garden should be illuminated by sunlight throughout the day. Bells, echinacea and foxglove and other perennials that prefer bright spots can also help keep ticks away from the garden.
8. Use organic pesticides
Some plants repel ticks and animals that might spread them. But there are other alternatives - organic pesticides. For example, garlic can be used against mosquitoes and mites, so after preparing a garlic solution, it is useful to spray it around your yard and garden. A solution is prepared with 4 cloves of garlic, a tablespoon of mineral oil, a teaspoon of liquid soap and water as follows:
* Garlic is chopped, mixed with oil and infused all day.
* After that, the mixture is filtered. Soap and 2 glasses of water are added to it.
* This concentrated mixture must be diluted: 2 tablespoons of the mixture into 2 cups of water. Then pour into a spray bottle.
* Stir the prepared solution thoroughly and spray over the area. If you notice that the plants are yellow or damaged in places, add more water to the spray to reduce the concentration of garlic.
9. Breeding chickens
Breeding chickens is a great way to control ticks. Chickens can eat them. They themselves find them in the grass and peck them up. In addition, poultry will provide the family with tasty and nutritious eggs.
