Trillium (Latin Trillium) - shade-tolerant flowering perennial from the Trillium family. Before he was separated into an independent family of the same name, he belonged to the Liliaceae family.
Description
Trillium is a rather unusual herbaceous perennial, endowed with very peculiar tuberous rhizomes. The stems of this plant form erect bushes with a height of twenty to fifty centimeters. At the tip of each stem, there are three fairly wide, diamond-shaped leaves, and just above these leaves you can see a very interesting flower, consisting of alternating three sepals and three petals. By the way, approximately in the middle of summer, the leaves of the trillium gradually die off.
The flowers of this plant can be both burgundy and pink or white. As for the flowering period, it usually spans from mid-May to about mid-June. At the same time, depending on weather conditions, the flowering of each flower lasts from five to fifteen days.
Trillium fruits have the appearance of ribbed berries, and the ripening of these berries usually occurs in July or August. In total, the genus of trillium includes about three dozen species.
Where grows
The homeland of the trillium is considered to be North America and East Asia. Most often, this handsome man can be found in rich and fairly humid deciduous forests.
Usage
Unfortunately, in our gardens, trillium is not particularly popular - this is due to the rather harsh conditions of its maintenance and the difficulty of its reproduction. Nevertheless, some gardeners fell in love with this handsome man to such an extent that they spare no time, effort or money for growing it. At the same time, white-flowered varieties of this plant are most often cultivated - large-flowered trillium, erect trillium and Kamchatka trillium. A little less often in the gardens you can also see white-flowered snow trillium, as well as wavy trillium, whose white flowers have a pink center, and trillium Small and trillium green endowed with luxurious red-brown flowers.
Trillium goes well with liverwort, groves, crested and primroses, so do not deny these beautiful flowers in such a neighborhood.
Growing and caring
Trillium will feel great on a variety of broadleaf trees (linden, oak, ash, chestnut, maple, etc.) located under the canopy, and these areas must be well shaded, as well as cool and humid enough. And the soil must certainly be enriched with humus.
Despite the fact that trillium is quite cold-resistant, it is still recommended to cover it with fallen leaves for the winter. And trillium is usually propagated by dividing the bushes in August, however, sometimes they also resort to seed reproduction. At the same time, seed scientists strongly recommend subjecting all seeds to preliminary stratification, which is carried out in three stages: first, for four months, the seeds are kept at a temperature of about plus five degrees, then they are kept for three months at a temperature of plus twenty one degrees, and then they are again placed in conditions with a temperature of plus five degrees for another three months. However, it is much more convenient and simpler to simply count on the emergence of self-seeding - as a rule, this occurs in the third year. By the way, trillium bushes grow splendidly on the same site without transplants and divisions up to twenty-five years!
