Articulated bedstraw is one of the plants of the family called rotational, in Latin the name of this plant will sound as follows: Galium articulatum Lam. (G. desypodium Klok.). As for the name of the articulate bedstraw family itself, in Latin it will be like this: Menyanthaceae Dumort.

Description of articulated bedstraw

The jointed bedstraw is a perennial herb. The rhizome of such a plant is creeping and reddish, it will be endowed with one to three stems. The height of such stems will fluctuate between thirty and one hundred centimeters, such stems will be strong and rough along the ribs, they can be either straight or ascending at the base. The leaves of the articulate bedstraw are in a whorl of four, they are wide, oblong-ovate or elliptical, the length of such leaves is five and a half to six and a half centimeters, and the width will be about one to two centimeters. The bracts of the articulate bedstraw turn out to be paired, at the top of the inflorescences they will be single, they are rather small, the length of such leaves is equal to five to six millimeters, and the width will be about one and a half to two millimeters, such leaves can be both elliptical and ovoid. The panicle of the articulate bedstraw is wide, dense and dichotomously branched, the half-umbrellas of this plant will be thirty to forty-flowered, they are collected at the very tops of the stems in three to four pieces. The diameter of the corolla of the articulate bedstraw will be about three to three and a half millimeters, it is endowed with broadly elliptical lobes and is painted in yellowish tones. The fruits of this plant will be naked, their length is one and a half millimeters, and the width will be about two and a half to three millimeters.

Flowering bedstraw articulate falls on the period from May to October. In natural conditions, it occurs on the territory of the Caucasus, Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine and the following regions of the European part of Russia: Ladoga-Ilmensky, Prichernomorsky, Volzhsko-Don, Nizhne-Volzhsky and Nizhne-Don. For growth, this plant prefers marshes, mountain slopes, forest edges, wet meadows, bushes, river and sea banks.

Description of the medicinal properties of the articulate bedstraw

The articulated bedstraw is endowed with very valuable healing properties, while it is recommended to use the rhizomes and grass of this plant for medicinal purposes. Grass includes stems, flowers and leaves. The presence of such valuable healing properties is recommended to be explained by the content of anthraquinones and alkaloids in the rhizomes of this plant, while in the aboveground part of the plant there are alkaloids, saponins, organic acids, coumarins, flavonoids, phenol carboxylic acids, their derivative chlorogenic and gallic acid. Vitamin C and alkaloids are present in the leaves of the bedstraw.

It should be noted that this plant is quite widespread in homeopathy. Here the bedstraw is used as an analgesic and sedative. As for traditional medicine, it is recommended to drink the juice of this plant two to three times a day, one tablespoon for ascites, malignant tumors, chronic heart diseases, chronic skin diseases, as well as the following diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: colitis, gastritis, ulcers of the stomach and duodenum. Powder of bedstraw articulate is used locally as a hemostatic agent. In case of stomach ulcers, powder of bedstraw articulate rhizomes should be used in one or two grams.
