Round-leaved mirabilis (lat. Mirabilis rotundifolia) - a beautifully flowering herb, rarely found in nature, which is one of the species of the genus Mirabilis (lat. Mirabilis), ranked by botanists in the Niktaginaceae family (lat. Nyctaginaceae). Its aerial part, which dies off in winter, like the Phoenix bird, revives in spring with numerous pubescent stems, thanks to a tenacious underground rhizome. Picturesque inflorescences of the plant delight the world in the morning hours of the day. Mirabilis round-leaved is on the list of endangered plants, and therefore needs human protection.

The Latin name of the genus, Mirabilis, equivalent to the Russian words "amazing" and "wonderful", perfectly suits all types of plants that are morphological relatives, and therefore united in this wonderful genus, which can surprise even a person who has seen a lot in his life.
The specific epithet "rotundifolia" Mirabilis round-leaved has earned the shape of its leaves, slightly different from the shape of the leaves of other plant species of the genus. This is especially noticeable when the leaves are just beginning to gain their strength and size, as in the photo below:
In the literature, you can find the erroneous name of this plant - "Allionia rotundifolia". Allionia "Allionia" is an independent genus of the Niktaginaceae family, consisting of only two plant species. And Mirabilis is round-leaved, although it has an external resemblance to plants of the Allionia genus, morphologically it differs from them.
Description
The underground horizontal rhizome, which has successfully overwintered in the soil, gives life to new vegetative stems in late spring or early summer.
Erect or ascending stems 2-3 decimetres in height are covered with soft hairs and broadly ascending leaves with short petioles.
The leaf plate is green above and glaucous from slight pubescence below. The round shape of the leaves at the beginning of life with the growth of the plant becomes ovoid-triangular or broadly ovoid. The dimensions of the leaf blade reach six centimeters in width and seven centimeters in length. The base of the leaf can be heart-shaped, wedge-shaped, or round, and the top is blunt to rounded. The leaves of the plant are thick, juicy, moderately leathery.
From late spring to mid-summer, from the axils of paired leaves, long branched peduncles are born, covered with soft or glandular pubescence. At the end of each branch are inflorescences. The envelope of the inflorescence is grayish-green, broadly bell-shaped, pubescent, the sepals are fused half the length, diverging above with ovoid lobes. Inside each wrapper there are 3 purple-pink flowers with yellow stamens sticking out from their center on white legs, while the petals are open from morning to noon.
The hairy, slightly wrinkled, pale olive-brown fruits of the plant have an obovate shape, a ribbed surface and a length of about 0.5 centimeters.
Habitat and threat of extinction
In natural conditions, Mirabilis round-leaved grows on open, calcareous, shale outcrops, characterized by sterility, and is under threat of extinction. Although the analysis of the population of this species is complicated by the fact that the size and number of plants vary significantly from year to year, which is directly related to the changing level of humidity. For example, a rainy summer can cause a spike in plant numbers at the end of the growing season. Although there are reasons that reduce the number of the population, and therefore the plant is in the field of vision of caring people of the United States of America, where the plant grows, for whom the preservation of the flora of our planet is not just words.
