Hibiscus (lat. Hibiscus) - a very extensive genus, part of the large Malvovy family.

Description

Hibiscus is a deciduous or evergreen plant with petiolate incised leaves. The flowers of almost all varieties of this plant are very graceful and large, endowed with bright graceful corollas. And the hibiscus color range boasts every imaginable and unthinkable shade, with the exception of black and blue.

Hibiscus fruits look like small bolls divided into five valves and contain a truly incredible amount of seeds, which can be either smooth or covered with fibers or soft fluff.

Where grows

Hibiscus is especially widespread in the New and Old Worlds, in the tropics or subtropics. It is also found on the territory of the countries of the former CIS, however, there most often you can see trifoliate hibiscus (sometimes it is called northern) and Syrian hibiscus. And the most common species is the marsh hibiscus.

By the way, the popular hibiscus drink is made from hibiscus!

Popular varieties

Sour hibiscus. It is a very durable, erect and dense annual or short-lived perennial with a fairly hard woody base. In height, it reaches from sixty centimeters to one and a half meters, and its average width is one meter. The broad-oval long-stemmed leaves of sour hibiscus can be either single-petaled, or three- or even five-petaled, and their length is about thirty centimeters. And the single axillary flowers of this plant boast a very peculiar funnel-shaped shape and a pleasant red-purple, pink or yellow color. As a rule, the diameter of these flowers ranges from six to ten centimeters.

Syrian hibiscus. This flower is an invariable symbol of Haiti - both tourists and locals love to decorate themselves with it. And in a number of Indian provinces, pink and red flowers are actively used to make wedding wreaths.

Hybrid hibiscus. It is the result of crossing several North American varieties of hibiscus - pink, holly and red. It is a herbaceous perennial that blooms with very large, incredibly spectacular and bright flowers. This plant is usually propagated in the spring, when it becomes warm enough, and the buds located on the root necks begin to swell gradually. By the way, it can be propagated both by grafting and by green cuttings or by dividing bushes.

Chinese hibiscus. This variety is often called the Chinese rose. This evergreen and incredibly ornamental shrub can grow up to three meters. The dark green leaves of this plant are characterized by an ovoid-elongated or oval-ovoid shape. They are glossy from above, and jagged along the edges. And the diameter of Chinese hibiscus flowers ranges from twelve to sixteen centimeters. As for their color, it can vary from yellowish and pinkish shades to orange or fiery red tones. This plant begins to bloom in early spring, and ends in late autumn. It is an incredibly popular indoor and greenhouse plant.

Dissected hibiscus. This is a spectacular shrub, endowed with thin shoots and green shiny leaves. The reddish-orange flowers of this variety of hibiscus reach five centimeters in diameter and boast the presence of bizarrely curved petals, as well as a rather uneven and deep enough fringe. It is an indoor and greenhouse plant.
