Although the Hibiscus plant is a relative of our home-grown Malva, people want exotic things so much that they sometimes prefer it, leaving Malva in place behind the hedge of the site. She looks through the picket fence, observing the hardships of the care of the thermophilic plant, and grins sadly at the simplicity of her soul

Genus hibiscus

The numerous genus Hibiscus, or, if you prefer, Hibiscus (Hibiscus) includes about two hundred and fifty plant species in its ranks. This amount allows you to have herbaceous plants, shrubs and even trees. They can be perennial and annual, evergreen and deciduous.

He managed to attract the attention of people to himself with his beautiful large bell-shaped flowers, very similar to Mallow flowers. The flowers are painted in different colors and can be plain or double.

Varieties

* Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) is the most recognizable species, as it can be found in various points of our little globe:

- in the apartment of a Russian;

- as a curb of the path leading from the hotel to the cleanest Red Sea in Egyptian Hurghada;

- at the resorts of the Black Sea;

- in China and in many other places.

As a houseplant, it chooses sunny locations without direct sunlight. Although, for example, in Hurghada, it grows without problems under the hot sun, it only requires good watering.

It has beautiful dark green leaves with a jagged edge and large funnel-shaped scarlet flowers that adorn the world for only a couple of days. This does not interfere with the long flowering period, since new buds bloom to replace the withered flowers.

* Syrian hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) is a deciduous shrub with rhombic or triangular leaves and mauve flowers that bloom in abundance from June to November. The flowers of the bred hybrids can be red, purple, pink, white.

* Hibiscus mutable (Hibiscus mutabilis) is a deciduous perennial shrub that is resistant to different temperatures. Leaves are heart-shaped. The name of the species expresses the quirkiness of flowers that live only one day and change their color during the day. In the morning they are white, then they begin to turn pink, darkening even more in the evening, and then fall off.

* Hibiscus sabdarifa (Hibiscus sabdariffa) - although the shrub was born in India, it spread all over the world, receiving other names, such as "Sudanese rose", "Rosella". The fleshy flower cups are dried and used to make a soft drink known as hibiscus.

* Hibiscus dissected petal (Hibiscus schizopetalus) is a rare species whose scarlet petals are intricately cut by nature.

Growing

In warm climates, shrubs grow very quickly in height and width, and therefore are regularly trimmed if used in hedges. Syrian hibiscus is quite cold-resistant, and therefore it is grown outdoors in areas with a cold climate.

Although in the literature they write that fertile and loose soil is preferable for a plant, but in the same Hurghada, the bushes grow, practically, on the sand, in two or three years turning into a high living wall, or an impressive lush bush. The plant requires regular watering.

Reproduction

Perennial hibiscus species are propagated by cuttings and sowing seeds. Some exotic lovers manage to grow Hibiscus, using the seeds found in the hibiscus, brought from the southern regions for brewing tea. The plant is also propagated by layering or grafting.

Enemies

The prolific aphid adores hibiscus leaves. Before you have time to look back, the agile ants have already dragged their "milch cows" and comfortably arranged them to their place of residence. We have to fight two insects at once: aphids and ants.
