Delicate shrubs and herbaceous plants named "Pachistachis" The Creator settled on the land of the legendary Inca Empire. Who knows, if it were not for the Spanish conquistador Pizarro, who enslaved an amazing civilization, we would not know today an amazingly beautiful plant. Its dark green large leaves and bright powerful spike-shaped inflorescences have taken root on our windowsills, delighting us and delighting in the juiciness of color and monumentality of the whole plant. Flower growers appreciate Pachistachis for a long flowering period

Rod Pachistachis

The name of the genus Pachystachys comes from two words. The second part of the long name is already familiar to us from the plant "Stakhis" or "Chistets", which is popular not so much for its spike-shaped ("stachis" is translated as "ear") inflorescences, as for the healing nodules that form on the roots of the plant. As for the plant "Pachistakhis", then, here, our attention is attracted by the "thick ear" of the inflorescence, bright and blooming for a long period.

Of the twelve species of this delicate and ornamental plant, two species have gained great popularity among gardeners: Pachistachis is bright red and

Bushes Pachystachis bright red (Pachystachys coccinea) in favorable conditions grow up to two meters in height. The dark green elliptical or lanceolate leaves grow up to 20 cm in length, maintaining the plant's status.

The last winter month the plant meets with decorative dense ears of green bracts and bright crimson (this color is also called scarlet-red) flowers, the length of which reaches 5 cm. It is difficult to remain indifferent to such beauty.

Bushes of Pachystachis yellow (Pachystachys lutea) are much more modest, grow up to 1 meter in height. Growing it in indoor conditions, they try to turn the plant into even more stunted, so that the base of the plant is not exposed, reducing its decorative appearance. Dark green leaves of an oblong-oval shape with a sharp tip and pronounced veins, giving the leaves the appearance of miniature crocodiles.

The shoots are crowned with spike-shaped inflorescences formed by bright yellow persistent bracts, from which white short-lived flowers appear, resembling either angel wings or fabulous sails.

Growing

Pachistachis requires a well-lit place without direct sunlight in the summer. It suits our usual room temperature, which does not drop below plus 18 degrees. Lower temperatures inhibit growth and damage the plant.

The soil for Pachistakhis is prepared from a mixture of earth, peat and sand, taking them in equal proportions. The acidity of the soil should be equal to 5-6 pH.

When planting a plant, a complete mineral fertilizer is added. In the active period of growth, twice a month, watering is combined with fertilizing with flower fertilizer. In winter, such feeding is carried out once every one and a half months. Watering should be regular to maintain moderate soil moisture.

After the end of the flowering mission, the stems are shortened, leaving 10-15 cm from the surface of the earth. This pruning stimulates branching and prevents the plant from taking over our living space. In addition, to maintain the appearance, the plant is relieved of worn-out inflorescences and injured parts of the plant.

Reproduction and transplantation

Propagated by apical cuttings obtained by pruning the plant. Rooting is carried out at a room temperature of at least 24 degrees. For more successful root formation, it is recommended to remove containers with cuttings in places with low illumination for 3 weeks. In order for the new plant to branch better, it is pinched several times.

The flowering plant can be purchased at flower shops. When choosing a plant, pay attention to branching. It should be compact and thick.

You can transplant every year without disturbing the plant during the flowering period.

Diseases and pests

The enemies of Pachistachis are cold; stagnant water causing root rot and spider mites.
