Since the time of the conquistadors, the American tropics have become cramped for abundant vegetation. After consulting with each other, exotic plants began to slowly migrate to Europe, and then further, settling in glazed winter greenhouses or occupying modest places on indoor window sills. Among them was Vriezia, which has beautiful striped leaves and bright bracts that create unique natural living sculptures
Rod Vriesius
About two hundred species of colorful plants are united by the genus Vriesea.
Plants of the genus fell in love with flower growers with rosettes of striped leaves. Long, lanceolate leaves, hard to the touch, have smooth edges. Their green color changes in intensity depending on the species, which is facilitated by brown or dark stripes on the surface of the leaves.
The beauty of the leaves is complemented by the bright bracts of the inflorescence, which usually appears from the center of the rosette in summer. A simple or branched spike-shaped inflorescence is famous not so much for its tubular small flowers as for its bright bracts. White or yellow flowers do not stay on the peduncle for long, while the bracts firmly hold on to the peduncle for a long period, painting it yellow, orange and red. The flowering period can be increased by treating Vriese with special phytohormones that provoke repeated flowering.
Some types of vriezia are epiphytes, and therefore do not require large containers for their existence, which is important for small rooms.
Varieties
•
Vriezia brilliant (Vriesea splendens) is an epiphytic plant species most often found in indoor conditions. The dark green narrow leaves are covered with brown stripes and form a funnel-shaped rosette. The plant blooms in summer, but, in indoor growing conditions, certain conditions can be created for year-round flowering. A spike-shaped inflorescence is born from the center of the rosette of leaves. Yellow, short-lived flowers hide behind stable bright red bracts.
•
Vriezia Zamorensis (Vriesea zamorensis) - distinguished by long narrow dark green leaves with a glossy surface. Inflorescence bracts are bright red.
•
Vriezia Polman (Vriesea x poelmanii) - bright green lanceolate leaves form a rosette, from which a branched inflorescence with bright red bracts appears at the base. Many hybrids have been bred, among which the following are popular with flower growers: "Fire", "Favoriet", "Elan", "Christian", "Charlotte", "Tiffany".
Growing
Born in the densely populated tropics, Vriesia prefers partial shade, but can also grow in a well-lit place where direct sunlight cannot reach.
It is indifferent to the quality of the soil, since it can grow without it, being an epiphyte. Therefore, the container in which the plant is determined serves not so much to nourish the roots as to complement the sculptural composition. One or more plants can be placed in one container.
The leaf rosette dies off after flowering, not meaning that the plant has died completely. After flowering, the leaves are cut at the base of the rosette. The main new shoots are formed quite quickly, which in a couple of years can form inflorescences. To help vriezia bloom faster, you can resort to the help of a ripe apple that releases ethylene. By placing such an apple closer to the plant, you will create an incentive for flowering.
Vriezia loves humidity, and therefore, in addition to abundant watering in spring and summer, it should be sprayed, and in the absence of inflorescences, pour water into the center of the outlet. At other times, you should keep the soil in a slightly damp state. Once every couple of weeks, watering is combined with mineral feeding.
The air temperature should not be allowed to drop to plus 13 degrees.
Plants are quite resistant to diseases and pests if favorable living conditions are created for them.
Reproduction
If you have the patience to wait 10 years for Vrieseia to bloom, then you can resort to reproduction by sowing seeds.
For impatient flower growers, the plant, as it grows, begins to create babies that can be separated from the mother when they reach 15 centimeters in height. They are transplanted into personal containers filled with a mixture of peat and sand, and greenhouse conditions are created before they take root.
