The planting site for gladioli is chosen near the walls of buildings or next to trees that can protect plants from violent winds. But this does not mean that it is necessary to close the gladioli from all four cardinal directions, thereby blocking the access of fresh air to the flower garden.
If gladioli are planted to decorate a plot, then in such cases, for the sake of an artistic effect, the needs of the plant are often sacrificed, which will affect the quality of their growth. Therefore, it is important to correctly plan the place of the flower garden, taking into account all the components.
If you are going to grow gladioli for cutting, then the needs of the plant cannot be neglected. The site should be convenient for watering the plant and for performing other maintenance work.
The quality of the planting material
To grow a beautiful slender gladiolus, first of all, you need to choose the right planting material.
The bulb must have a height equal to or slightly less than its diameter. And experts consider the most productive size of the bulb diameter to be up to 3.5 cm.
The best planting material is the so-called juvenile bulbs. These are large (3, 5-4, 5 cm in diameter) corms that have not yet had time to show their inflorescences to the world, and therefore they do not have a trace of their spent peduncle.
The bulb must be healthy, free from traces of diseases and physical defects. In order to better examine the bulbs for the presence of diseases, it is better to remove the cover dry scales before planting.
For prophylaxis, the bulbs can be treated with a 0.7% manganese solution. After 25 minutes, rinse thoroughly and dry the bulbs. There are other ways to treat your bulbs before planting.
Soil for planting
Gladioli do not tolerate both high acidity and strong alkaline reactions, slowing down their growth in such situations. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the acidity of the soil of the selected area before planting.
The guarantee of successful germination and growth is a well-cultivated soil rich in humus and warmed up by the time of planting. At a depth of 10 cm, the temperature should be at least plus 10 degrees.
Boarding time
The timing of planting gladioli depends on the climatic zone of cultivation. In the southern regions, the period from mid-March to mid-April is suitable for this, and in the regions to the north, from the end of April to mid-June. Later planting times will prevent the plant from growing to the flowering stage as well as form viable bulbs for storage until the next season.
Young shoots withstand short-term spring frosts up to minus 5 degrees. But in the fall, even minus one degree stops the growth of gladiolus.
When calculating the planting time, it must be borne in mind that a period of 80-100 days is sufficient for simple flower cultivation. If you want to get your seeds and grow viable bulbs, then a period of 150-175 days is required.
