How else can you diversify your vitamin diet in winter, besides parsley and dill collected from the beds on the windowsill? For distillation, you can also put other root vegetables, the greens of which are rich in vitamins that are necessary for a weakened body, and whose smell will fill the room with a pleasant summer aroma
Conditions for forcing celery
Among the closest relatives of parsley, it is difficult to imagine such a vegetable as celery. However, they belong to the same family and the agricultural techniques of these crops are very similar.
It is possible to grow both root and leaf celery with petiole indoors. But the difference is that the leaf and petiole are brought into the room in the fall for growing, and only varieties of the root variety are put on forcing.
For distillation, not the largest specimens are selected - root crops weighing up to 100 g. It is preferable to choose a container for distillation wider. Root crops are laid by a bridge method, the root crop to the root crop, and when planted in separate pots, the "beds" take up an unreasonable amount of space in the room.
Forcing does not require a lot of nutrient substrate. It will be enough to put a layer of soil about 10 cm on the bottom of the boxes. After the celery is firmly planted in the beds, add a little soil on the sides. But you do not need to bury the roots completely in the box, as this can lead to rotting of the vegetables.
Another common cause of rotting celery planted for forcing is improper watering. It should be carried out infrequently, once a week and a half. Moistening is performed carefully, at the root, trying not to leave drops on the leaves and petioles. At the same time, you need to monitor the humidity in the room. Too dry air does not contribute to the development of dense greenery. Therefore, it is recommended to spray water near the beds, but without getting it on the plants.
When forcing greens, vegetables consume nutrients embedded in root crops. To increase yields, it is recommended to replenish them with regular soil dressing. For this purpose, ammonium nitrate is used - 2 g per 1 liter of water.
At the initial stage of forcing, boxes with celery are kept at a temperature of + 10 … + 12 ° C. Over time, it can be raised to + 20 … + 22 ° С. Like parsley, celery is picked from the periphery. The cut is made even and neat, without damaging the growing point - it will still yield a crop.
How to get Katran shoots
In indoor conditions, you can grow a close relative of another well-known herbaceous plant - horseradish. We are talking about a perennial of the Cabbage family - katrana. A variety such as katran cordifolia is used as an ornamental plant to decorate the garden. And the seaside katran is used for forcing bleached shoots under room conditions, as is done with asparagus.
Like horseradish, the seaside katran forms a highly branched rhizome. To prepare for forcing, the side roots are removed, the lower part is shortened. The petioles, on the other hand, are not completely cut off - 2-3 cm is enough to maintain the growing point.
For distillation, you will need containers about 20 cm deep. You can use ordinary pots for indoor plants. When their diameter is about 25 cm, there is enough feeding area to plant 3-4 roots. Unlike celery, katran needs room in the beds. They are completely buried with humus and watered abundantly.
The buried roots are hidden from the light. The boxes are covered with an opaque film. The pots can be placed in black garbage bags or covered with other suitable sized pots, after sealing the drain holes. The resulting beds are kept at a temperature of + 12 … + 15 ° C. They start harvesting the shoots after 5-6 weeks.
