Today, you will hardly surprise anyone with white cabbage in your garden. The bewilderment of the neighbors will most likely cause her absence from the beds. But close relatives of cabbage are rare guests on our backyard plots. The farming practices of Savoy and Red cabbage are similar to the cultivation of their white-leaved sister. There are peculiarities in the cultivation of kohlrabi, Brussels sprouts and Peking cabbage. Let's get to know them better
Brussels sprouts
Brussels sprouts have a rather exotic look. She ties her miniature heads of cabbage on a long thick stem in the axils of the leaves. To prepare various dishes, they do not even need to be cut - its tight balls are used as a whole. By the way, this vegetable holds the record among other cabbages in terms of vitamin C.
Unlike its white-headed cousin, Brussels sprouts do not like fresh manure in the soil. It is more suitable for soil with a low nitrogen content, loam. Otherwise, the heads of cabbage curl the leaves poorly, becoming loose. From dressings, superphosphate and potassium chloride are suitable. These fertilizers are applied at the moment of head formation 1-2 times.
Seeds for seedlings are sown 35 days before planting. Seedlings are planted in open ground in early May. It is important to monitor the development of the plant and not to miss the moment when the formed heads of cabbage begin to thicken - then the apical bud of the plants needs to be pinched. Harvesting takes place at the end of October. Store at about 0 ° C.
Chinese cabbage
The cultivation period for Chinese cabbage lasts 30-60 days. The beauty of this vegetable is that with a dense planting after thinning, the removed plants can immediately be used to make salad, and the cabbage remaining in the garden can be left to get heads of cabbage.
Seeds can be sown directly into open ground in April. If the climate does not allow this in mid-spring, then reproduction is performed through seedlings, which are moved to the beds in May. To obtain an early harvest, the distance between the plants is left about 10-15 cm. To get heads of cabbage, it is increased to 30-40 cm.
You can get the Peking harvest several times a year. Re-sowing is carried out in June and July. It is not recommended to grow vegetables above 40 cm. In greenhouses, the ripening period is reduced. In a greenhouse, it is about 20-30 days.
Peking cabbage can be used as a seal crop. Due to its fast ripening period, it will become an excellent predecessor in greenhouses or under a film cover in the vegetable garden for cucumbers and tomatoes.
Kohlrabi
Kohlrabi has a very unusual appearance that bears little resemblance to cabbage. And it is customary to eat not leaves, but an overgrown stem plant. Therefore, the translation of the name of this variety means "cabbage turnip". For the fact that it is also rich in vitamin C, it received such a very telling name as "northern lemon". It is eaten raw, used to make soups, and stewed.
This is an early ripening crop that allows you to harvest two crops per season. Unlike white cabbage, it requires less space to grow. Kohlrabi is planted at a distance of about 20 cm in a garden bed with a row spacing of about 50 cm.
For planting in open ground, seedlings should be at least 35 days. Can be grown in the vegetable garden directly through the seeds. Sowing is performed from the second decade of May to mid-summer.
You can use kohlrabi as a compactor for late-ripening crops - Brussels sprouts and white cabbage. It takes about 50-60 days from the moment of sowing to ripening of the stem. It is not recommended to be late with harvesting, otherwise the fruit coarsens and loses its high taste. Store at a temperature of about + 1 … 0 ° C.
