Raspberries are considered a winter-hardy shrub. And in the absence of snow cover, it can withstand temperature drops down to -20 ° C, or even more. And yet, if you value your raspberry and the high yield of your plantations, you should follow the recommendations for preparing shrubs for winter and cold weather
Are the bushes ready for wintering?
In October, it is advisable to water the raspberry tree. This recommendation is especially relevant if the summer was dry - in this case, autumn watering before the bushes leave for winter is a must.
At the end of October, supports should be placed on young plantings. And the old fruiting bushes need to be bent to the ground and the shoots are tied. This will protect raspberries from various damage to shoots in the frosty winter months: from strong winds and drying out in freezing temperatures. Such phenomena are more often harmful in regions with little snowy winters - especially when the temperature fluctuates, often crossing the 0 ° C mark up and down.
Well, plants that have successfully prepared for winter are easy to recognize:
• their stems have finished growing;
• an apical kidney is formed at the end;
• lateral kidneys no longer expand in size;
• integumentary tissues have become a characteristic color for the variety;
• the foliage of the shrub is three-quarters yellow and opal.
Ways to bend raspberries for the winter
It is necessary to have time to bend the raspberry shoots to the ground before the arrival of noticeable frosts. Gardeners have invented several techniques for performing this technique:
• the most straightforward way is to bend all the branches of the shrub in one direction so that the top is at the base, and tie them all together;
• you can incline the shoots of the bush towards one another, intercepting them with a rope together closer to the base;
• tie up the bushes in pairs crosswise, inclining the tops to the pegs, which are dug in near the bases of the plants;
• on a large plantation, shoots can be tilted between rows and pressed down with heavy poles, boards that will support their inclined position;
• slender rows of raspberries can be tilted to each other in one direction, weaving shrub shoots with an original braid - this weaving will hold the branch without using ropes or a press.
Supports for young animals
A wide variety of materials can be used as support. It can be wooden sticks, and pieces of iron pipes, reinforced concrete products. The main characteristics that the support for the bush must meet:
• length - about 2 m;
• diameter is approximately 5-7 cm.
If supports have previously been used on other plants, it is recommended that they be disinfected before being installed on a new plantation. Wooden products are sanded, making it with a flat and smooth surface. It is also useful to leave them in an aqueous solution of copper sulfate for 2-3 days. Iron supports are coated with bitumen varnish.
On plantings with a large number of seedlings, wire, thick fishing line, twine will come in handy. Stretched between the pillars, they will serve as a support in the form of a trellis. But this material will be successfully replaced by thin perches.
Various techniques can be used to tie the shoots to the pegs. The easiest way is to pull all the shoots to one column and pull them around with a strap in two places: at a level of approximately 0.5 and 1.5 m. When there are many raspberry bushes in a row, the pegs can be dug in between them and alternately tied to nearby ones in different directions.
When installing a vertical trellis, the twine is pulled at the same height at which you need to grab a raspberry shoot to it: 0.5 m and 1.5 m. In this case, the tips of the shoots should not be higher than 20 cm from the upper level of the trellis. If they nevertheless stretch out beyond these limits, they need to be bent in an arc and also tied up.
