Arrowhead is a very peculiar plant, wholly or partially in the water. This handsome man will become a very original decoration element not only for the coastal zone, but also for all kinds of water bodies. There is an incredibly attractive arrowhead in Europe, America and Asia. Delicate and unpretentious, it will appeal to many connoisseurs of beauty
Getting to know the plant
The large and pointed leaves of this representative of the Chastukhov family are arrow-shaped, and the bizarre floating leaves are ribbon-shaped. An excellent arrowhead can be not only a perennial, but also an annual. It blooms with large brush-forming white or pinkish flowers. Amusing tubers are formed on the numerous shoots of this aquatic inhabitant. By the way, these tubers are edible: some aquatic animals enjoy them; also waterfowl and fish will not refuse to eat them.
There are several varieties of arrowhead, and it makes sense to briefly mention each of them.
Arrowhead spear-shaped. It is characterized by stem length ranging from 40 to 210 centimeters. It blooms at the very end of summer.
Arrowhead is cereal (it is also called cereal). This completely winter-hardy species can be both a perennial and an annual. It blooms, as a rule, in late summer, and the length of its stems ranges from 5 to 120 cm.
Arrowhead is ordinary. In this variety, the height is up to eighty centimeters. But the leaves on it, depending on the habitat of the plant, are found as many as three types: airy (pointed or long-petiolate, erect or triangular), floating (such leaves are always long-petiolate), and also underwater (these leaves are always linear). In plants growing at a considerable depth, the leaves are narrow, almost transparent, yellowish-green in color. The height of its rather strong peduncles is 20 - 100 cm, and this species usually blooms in June-August.
Arrowhead broadleaf. This species is characterized by good winter hardiness. The height of its stems is about 15 - 140 cm. The sagittal-lobed leaves can be either wide or narrow, pointed.
Arrowhead subulate. This species can grow easily even in brackish water. Its height is from 5 to 40 cm. The leaves of this type of arrowhead are mainly ribbon-like and underwater, and the floating leaves (if any) are painted in a pale green color. Since this species does not differ in good winter hardiness, before the onset of winter it must be removed from water bodies.
Arrowleaf use
This plant mainly acts as an element of the design of coastal zones, streams and reservoirs. Arrowhead combines quite well with other aquatic vegetation, and in coastal flower beds it will perfectly find a common language with its neighbors.
How to grow
Arrowhead is extremely light-requiring, therefore, for its cultivation, it is necessary to choose well-lit areas. For water, both standing water and slow flowing water will do. If there is a desire to grow an arrowhead not in water, but in the soil, without immersing it in water, then the soil must be provided with excellent moisture. In principle, in the presence of a properly moistened substrate, it may well adapt to a completely terrestrial lifestyle.
An attractive arrowhead can reproduce equally well both by seeds and vegetatively, nodules formed at the ends of shoots and by dividing bushes.
The optimal planting depth of the arrowhead is from 10 to 30 centimeters. It is worth noting that it can grow at a depth of up to five meters, however, under such conditions, its flowering should not be expected.
Even a complete lack of care will not prevent an unpretentious arrowhead from growing. Sometimes this aquatic pet is pampered with feeding to accelerate its growth. All kinds of diseases and attacks of various pests do not pose any danger to him. And the winter hardiness of a handsome arrowhead depends solely on its type.
