Echinodorus hearty is an inhabitant of numerous reservoirs of distant and mysterious Central America. It adapts wonderfully to various aquarium conditions and has long been one of the largest and most attractive aquatic plants. It grows quickly, looks impressive, and is very unpretentious in care. This marvelous plant will be an excellent decoration for almost any aquarium, giving them a special flavor. Echinodorus hearty will look no less impressive in picturesque paludariums, as well as in humid greenhouses
Getting to know the plant
Echinodorus cordialis is a happy owner of luxurious speckled leaves. As for its height, in the first year of the stay of the aquatic beauty in aquariums, as a rule, it does not exceed twenty or thirty centimeters, but if you wait a little, then after some time this handsome man can grow up to eighty centimeters. Oval leaf plates of Echinodorus cordifolia often reach twenty centimeters in length and ten in width. All leaves are endowed with heart-shaped plump bases, as well as hard sharp or rounded tops. And the edges of the leaves can be either even or slightly wavy.
This wonderful aquatic inhabitant has both above-water and amusing floating leaves, as well as tall flower arrows.
How to grow
Echinodorus cordifolia is best grown in deep aquariums or in humid greenhouses. It is desirable to provide the temperature regime for its successful development in the range from twenty-two to twenty-six degrees. Nevertheless, this magnificent aquatic inhabitant can also withstand a drop in temperature to twelve degrees, but no more than three weeks. If the temperature drops even lower, then Echinodorus cordifolia will begin to shed its leaves, while retaining its rhizomes capable of regeneration. And if the temperature exceeds twenty-six degrees, then an elegant aquatic inhabitant will need to organize rest periods lasting from one to one and a half months, and the air temperature during his rest, ideally, should not exceed eighteen to twenty degrees.
The best aquatic environment for the comfortable growth of Echinodorus cordifolia will be fresh water with a hardness of eight to sixteen degrees and with its active reaction over 6, 8. Alas, he does not like too soft and overly acidic water.
The soil for growing a colorful aquatic plant silts moderately or weakly, since in highly silted soil its vulnerable roots can begin to rot. It is definitely not worth enriching the soil with humus. As for the nature of the substrate, it does not play a decisive role in the cultivation of a beautiful aquatic inhabitant - both large pebbles and coarse-grained sand will be suitable. Also, from time to time in the soil, under the very roots of the plant, it is recommended to add clay and charcoal.
Lighting should be of decent intensity, since the generally unpretentious Echinodorus cordifolia usually does not tolerate even short-term shading. As sources of artificial light, fluorescent lamps are purchased, and backlighting for a beautiful water man is allowed to be organized from simple incandescent lamps. For each liter of water, the lighting power should be approximately equal to the order of 0.4 - 0.5 watts. The daylight hours of a bizarre water beauty should be equal to about eight hours a day, then he will be able to fully manifest all his best decorative qualities. And if you extend it to eleven or twelve o'clock, then the magnificent heart-leaved echinodorus will not only begin to release pretty leaves, but also bloom.
A wonderful aquatic inhabitant reproduces in aquarium conditions almost always vegetatively, through the formation of young shoots on graceful peduncles. When daughter shoots are seen on them, the flower arrows need to be lowered into the water. And when the lobes of the roots and several leaves are formed on the daughter specimens, they are separated from the adult mother bushes and placed in the ground. They develop well there and grow quite quickly.
When cultivating an amazing green pet in colorful humid greenhouses, it is possible to get seeds as well, but they are characterized by a rather low germination rate. Ripe seeds are sown in shallow bowls filled with sand filled with water, trying, if possible, to provide them with fairly bright lighting. When growing a luxurious aquatic inhabitant in greenhouses, ordinary garden soil with sand and peat additives is often used.
Echinodorus hearty also feels great in paludariums - it blooms in them earlier, and even reaches much more impressive sizes.
