The bog flower, also called the nymphaean, is very decorative and absolutely unpretentious. Its flowers resemble cucumber flowers, and the leaves are tiny leaves of funny water lilies. Swamp flower is an ideal solution for decorating water bodies, because at the very beginning of the season it quickly begins to cover the water surface. However, it is more suitable for large reservoirs, since for small reservoirs it is considered to be overly aggressive
Getting to know the plant
Marsh flower is a deep-sea perennial plant belonging to the Shift family. The marsh flower has several names - water lily-shaped limnantemum, Bennett's villarsia, shield-leaved nymph and shield-leaved nymph. In Russia, this handsome man is very widespread: Eastern and Western Siberia, the south of the European part of Russia, the Caucasus, the Far East - the habitat of the bog flower is truly enormous.
This amazing plant with an underwater creeping rhizome is capable of rooting its stems in the most diverse and sometimes even unexpected places of water bodies. In addition, the bog flower has very interesting miniature leaves - their diameter does not exceed five centimeters. The edges of the leaves are often wavy, and sometimes brownish specks can be observed on the leaves themselves. Both the leaves and flowers of the bog flower are floating.
Bright yellow five-petal flowers with fringed edges are collected in small inflorescences, reaching an average of four centimeters in diameter. Fancy flowers rise above the water surface by about five to eight centimeters, no more. The marsh flower blooms from July to September.
The fruits of the aquatic beauty are small green, yellow or brown boxes.
The stems, leaves, and flower buds of the marsh flower are edible - in some countries they are even used as greenery. It is also used in folk medicine: fresh leaves of the plant are an excellent antipyretic, diuretic and skin remedy, successfully used for tumors, ulcers, bruises and burns.
Such an interesting plant grows in slow-flowing rivers and lakes, as well as in low-lying swamps. The bog flower is listed in the Red Data Books of a number of Russian regions, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus.
There is also such a variety of marsh flower as Korean marsh flower, but it can be found only in Korea, on the territory of Manchuria and in the area of Lake Khanka in Russia. This variety, in contrast to the ordinary marsh flower, has smaller flowers, which are also surprisingly beautiful: a bright yellow core framed by white petals looks like a small sun.
How to grow
The marsh flower reproduces not only in late spring, but also in summer, by dividing rhizomes or cuttings. It should be planted below the water level by 5 - 60 cm. The place where the bog flower will grow should be well lit by the sun. It is best to choose fertile soil.
Typically, the marsh flower is first planted in small containers, which are then submerged. If there is soil at the bottom, you can be sure that the plant will move into it as soon as possible. It is not forbidden to land it directly into the ground.
If the bog flower grows in reservoirs that do not freeze to the very bottom, then it has excellent winter hardiness.
As for the care, constant monitoring is needed for the bog flower. Its excessive spread is controlled by periodically pruning and redrawing the plant. In general, the bog flower is very unpretentious to care for. It is resistant to pests, it is also not susceptible to disease.
It is difficult to find a more suitable decoration for shallow water bodies - the bog flower is able to very harmoniously complement cute kushinki, stately water hyacinth, beautiful pistia, and also perfectly combines with bizarre leaves of sedges, rushes and other coastal vegetation.
