The unusually beautiful double flowers of Kalistegiya again attract florists. Everyone wants to decorate their garden with this extraordinary flower. It is not for nothing that the people call her "the French rose"
On a hot afternoon, it is pleasant to sit in the gazebo, where the cool air refreshes the face, and the unique flowers delight the eye with their beauty. In such a place, climbing plants are used to create good shade. These include kalistegiya.
Species diversity
There are about 25 species in the genus Kalistegiya. All of them are perennial herbaceous vines, with unusually beautiful inflorescences of various shapes and sizes. The most common are 3 types:
• fence;
• hairy;
• fluffy.
The most beautiful is the fluffy calistegia with light pink double flowers.
Place in the garden
Growing calistegy is easy. It needs a good frame, along which young shoots will strive upward, firmly braiding it. Sometimes, reaching a height of up to 3 meters. For these purposes, simple structures are suitable: trellises, gazebos, arches. Planted near buildings and fences, the flower will cover unsightly places. A trimmed lawn is able to set off bright inflorescences.
Growing conditions
Kalistegia loves sunny places, fertile soils with a light composition and a low location of groundwater. In shady places, flowering is later and less luxurious.
Does not require shelter for the winter. But if frosts begin without snow and in the first year of life, it is better to cover it a little with spruce branches or other improvised material.
Young plants come out of dormancy late and start growing, only in late May, when the threat of night frosts has passed.
Bloom
In mid-July, unusually beautiful rose inflorescences appear and delight the eye until autumn. Their diameter is from 6 to 8 cm. There are so many flowers that they cover the green leaves. To create a neat look, dried inflorescences are removed. Which increases the number of newly formed buds.
Kalistegiya predicts the weather. Flowers are closed before precipitation falls.
Correct care
In the fall, fill the planting site with compost or decomposed manure, mixing sand on heavy soils. Ash and complex fertilizers are spread over the surface. Dig a shovel onto the bayonet.
It is necessary to limit the growth of rhizomes in area. Before planting, a plastic or iron container up to 40 cm high is buried flush with the surface. The bottom is pre-removed.
In the spring, the roots are planted to a depth of 12-15 cm, several pieces at a distance of 20 cm from each other. Spill water on top.
During the first days, the soil moisture is maintained at a high level, preventing it from drying out. After rooting, the watering rate is reduced.
Twice a season: during the period of active regrowth, during mass flowering, they are fed with complex fertilizers (Zdraven, Baikal), dissolving 1 tablespoon in 10 liters of water. First, the soil around the plant is moistened, then a nutrient solution is applied.
Loosening the surface can easily damage the roots, so to retain moisture, use a mulch from hardwood sawdust. It helps to fight slugs at the same time.
In the fall, the stems are cut at soil level. The plant goes into dormancy until spring.
Reproduction
Fluffy calistegia reproduces by dividing the rhizome in early spring, since this species has no seeds.
Self-confident gardeners use the cuttings method. For this, the plants are dug up in the fall along with the ground, placed in a container and stored in the cellar all winter. They take it out in early March, clearing it from the soil, divide it into pieces of at least 5 cm. The cut is treated with ash. The rhizomes are placed in separate cups, sprinkled with water moderately and covered with polyethylene on top.
Germinate in a warm place in the light. When the plants reach 6cm in height, the growth point is removed. This technique allows the root system to grow stronger, slows down the growth of shoots and promotes abundant branching. Then the temperature is lowered to 15-18 degrees.
In May, young seedlings are accustomed to daylight, leaving them in the shade of trees for several hours. When the threat of frost has passed, they are transplanted to a permanent place.
In the year of planting, the underground part of the loaches grows. The stems give insignificant growths at this time. But in the following years, the green mass is actively growing, abundant flowering occurs.
Calistegia is a perennial plant. Therefore, it is enough to plant it once in your garden, take proper care of it, and then it will delight you with its unique flowering for many years.
