If earlier alpine slides and rocky gardens seemed to many of us something outlandish, now it is not such a rarity, and even in the most ordinary summer cottages. But some summer residents sometimes do not get a rock garden at all, but an ordinary slide among the stones. And all because of the inability to choose the right plants for these purposes! What are the basic requirements for plants for a rock garden, and which representatives of the flora world are best suited for their design?
Basic requirements for plants
Ideally, most of the plants used to decorate rock gardens should be perennials - constantly tinkering with annuals will be extremely difficult and very, very troublesome. Also, plants intended for planting in rock gardens should be predominantly short, however, some spectacular exceptions in this case are still allowed. And it will be best if, in addition to everything, these plants turn out to be also slow-growing - then you don't have to constantly plant over-growing plantings!
How to position the plants correctly?
Plants in rock gardens are recommended to be arranged in a chaotic manner, without an abundance of clear lines, and even more so without carefully calibrated proportions. It is important to take into account that there will always be less moisture on top, and more sun, which means that only sun-loving and drought-resistant crops should be placed at the top. And on the slopes, all kinds of tenacious opportunists who come from mountainous areas will grow much more confidently. As for the plants planted at the very bottom, that is, in the most humid part of the rock garden, they must necessarily be sufficiently hygrophilous and responsive to excess moisture.
Do not plant too high vegetation at the very bottom of rock gardens - this approach will "steal" their volume and height. But various ground cover plants, on the contrary, will perfectly help to highlight and favorably emphasize all the charms of the picturesque rocky slopes! What kind of plants will be truly ideal for planting in rock gardens?
Levisia
This lush and brightly blooming, but at the same time rather undersized beauty will be a real find for rock gardens. At the same time, it is recommended to plant Levisia on the eastern or western side of the slope, that is, in a place where the sun will not be visiting all day.
Bryozoan subulate
And behind this name is an incredibly delicate creeping plant, endowed with the ability to form thick and dense carpets, generously covered with miniature white flowers. By the way, the subulate bryozoan is very hygrophilous, that is, at the very foot of the rock garden, it will feel great!
Mountain pine
Such a pine will be the best high accent, in addition, this child of the mountains can boast of a very impressive unpretentiousness. The fluffy spreading branches of this plant simply cannot but attract the eyes!
Thrift
Sun-loving plant, ideal for planting on the southern slopes of rock gardens. Armeria will look especially great if you combine several different shades of this beauty at once!
Creeping thyme
When thyme blooms, it is not only amazingly beautiful - at this blessed time, a wonderful delicate aroma is spread throughout the entire site, attracting a great many bees! Thyme creeping will look especially good in the upper part of any rock garden, and this wonderful plant is really worthy of paying close attention to it!
