The aquatic buttercup is one of the few plants native to the Australian continent that has managed to perfectly acclimatize in aquariums. This feature allowed the beautiful plant to spread throughout the world. The aquatic buttercup, grown both in water bodies and in coastal areas, is very beautiful and at the same time very unpretentious. Moreover, it often turns out to be a very colorful ground cover carpet, because with the right content, it grows pretty soon
Getting to know the plant
The aquatic buttercup is a small plant with a long stem and rhizomes located along the ground. Its bright green leaf plates are perpendicular to its long petioles. The leaves are finely dissected or whole, can be of two types: thin underwater hair-like and trifoliate above-water, somewhat reminiscent of clover leaves. The flowers located above the water surface (at a height of 3 to 10 cm) are small, white, with a yellow center. Flowers can grow as complex inflorescences, or one at a time. The flowering of the aquatic buttercup begins in June and ends towards the end of July.
In nature, the aquatic buttercup grows, as a rule, in shallow waters. It is not only beautiful, but also useful - the water buttercup perfectly stops the destructive activity of pathogenic microorganisms and perfectly saturates the water with vital oxygen. Together with various representatives of the local flora, it is often planted in the shallow waters of ponds and streams.
How to grow
A water buttercup is planted in the foreground or in the middle. Despite the fact that a sunny location would be preferable for a plant, it develops no worse in partial shade. As a rule, in one place the water buttercup develops successfully for 4 - 5 years, growing quite densely at the same time. If it is necessary to grow a single bush, then so that it cannot grow in breadth, its shoots must be removed in a timely manner. To make the pet look more decorative, when planting, side bends are removed from it. And the water buttercup growing with a dense green carpet must be periodically thinned out.
To grow this beautiful flower, the soil needs to be moist, nutritious and light. Plentiful regular watering is required. As for dressings, the water buttercup needs them once a season: before the beginning of its flowering. The best feeding will be organic fertilizers. Microfertilizers can also be added to the water. A good stimulator of plant growth is the supply of carbon dioxide.
Water buttercup is extremely undemanding to water parameters. And yet the most suitable water for it will be water with a temperature of 20 - 29 degrees and with a hardness of 2 - 24. You should try to pick up the soil in the form of fine gravel or fine sandy. It should be well silted - by 3 - 5 cm. As for the lighting, it can be in the range from moderate to strong: if the water buttercup grows in the foreground, the lighting should be very bright, and when growing the aquatic beauty in the middle ground, the intensity lighting is slightly reduced. The optimal daylight hours for this plant are at least 12 hours per day.
The aquatic buttercup reproduces by both root cuttings and seeds: it is better to propagate it by cuttings in August-September, and by seeds - from February to April. New buttercups should be planted in the spring. It is quite enough to simply place the plant in a pond.
The water buttercup is unpretentious, it can easily overwinter even in a pond, but in this case, in the spring you should (in order to avoid siltation of water) to catch the dead plant parts.
Despite all the advantages, the water buttercup is not resistant to diseases and pests: sometimes it becomes infected with various fungal diseases, and can also be damaged by caterpillars and nematodes.
