Many have heard the song about the red viburnum … However, experienced gardeners know about another, very interesting representative of such a berry-fruit tree. Black viburnum is also called gordovina. It is very rare in gardens, but gardeners who managed to get to know her admire and admire this plant

Black viburnum is a shrub that reaches a height of up to three meters. However, depending on the region of cultivation and the conditions of care, sometimes the gordovina grows up to five meters. The leaves are oval. Their length is about eighteen centimeters. The structure of the leaf plates is wrinkled, and the color differs from the location - they are dark green at the top, velvety below and with a grayish tint. In general, black viburnum is very different from its red relative.

The blooming phase of the black viburnum begins in May or June. Tiny flowers have cream shades at this moment. They are also collected in umbrella-shaped inflorescences. As for the fruits, they have an oval shape. They are also somewhat flattened. At first, they are characterized by a pinkish color, after which they turn red, and as a result, at the end of fruiting, they become completely black. You need to understand that such berries should never be eaten. They are not edible! This is an ornamental plant!

Under natural conditions, black viburnum can be found in the western part of Europe, in Ukraine (south and southwest). You can also find it in the Crimea or the Caucasus. Even in our country, more precisely, in its European part, one can find wild arrogance. Moscow and St. Petersburg are also becoming localizations for the cultivation of black viburnum. Such a shrub can protect the soil from pests and the penetration of pathogenic bacteria.

The plant has a lot of positive features, for which it is appreciated by gardeners. It can grow well in the shade and is resistant to frosty weather, exhaust fumes and dust. Salty soils will also not interfere with the development of arrogance. Therefore, in urban conditions, it grows very often. Shrubs are also found in parks. The long flowering period and attractive leaf shape are especially appreciated in the autumn season. The foliage becomes scarlet at this time, and the shrubs in the garden emphasize the general composition of the landscape on the territory. With the help of black viburnum, hedges are installed, attractive group plantings and make it an excellent separate decorative element. There are also very beautiful types of gordovina - wrinkled, variegated, dwarf, golden and marble.

However, not only the attractive appearance is the main advantage of the black viburnum. Its fruits actually have a lot of useful properties and qualities. In general, nectar is contained in a very small volume in the flowers of Hordovina. But at the same time, it is they that make it possible to provide bees with pollen. The branches of the shrub are characterized by flexibility and plasticity. Therefore, they began to be actively used as weaving hoops and baskets. Tannins are components found in the fruits and bark of the plant. A decoction of these parts is very helpful in treating the gums and throat. Its astringent action helps to treat certain diseases. The bark has another interesting feature. It is an ingredient for making bird glue. Several years ago, it was from black viburnum that ink was produced.

Reproduction

Reproduction of pride occurs in several ways. For example, this can be done through seeds, green cuttings or cuttings. Seed propagation has its own special features. In general, the planting material for black viburnum is very different from other crops. The embryo in the seed has a rather primitive structure. Its growth and development can be performed only after the seed is planted in the ground. The root bud germinates only the next year in the summer season. It is worth noting the hypocotyl knee, which in August brings the seed shell to the surface of the earth. It is in it that there are two cotyledonous leaf plates and the upper point of growth. In this form, the seedlings tolerate wintering. The first shoots can be seen only in the spring season next year.

You can get seedlings in the year in which the black viburnum was planted. This requires subjecting the seeds to a two-stage stratification. In such a situation, fresh seed is placed in a nylon bag, and this bag is already placed in a wet, pre-prepared substrate. They can be sand with coarse grains, moss or sawdust. Here the seeds should be placed within two months. The optimum temperature is twenty - five to thirty degrees.
