But the ripening period for root crops is quite short, and most summer residents want to enjoy fresh vegetables on their table throughout the season. And in this case, its exotic relatives can become an excellent alternative to traditional options for radish. In particular - pod or Javanese radish, which has an unusual appearance, but is similar in its taste to its congener-root vegetable.

An exotic vegetable crop, known in our latitudes as pod radish, is a plant that reaches two hundred centimeters in height, with fleshy stems, on which, depending on the variety, pods 10 or more centimeters long are formed. Some varieties of the Javanese relative of the root vegetable we are accustomed to have a bright purple color, but for the most part they remain green even after reaching ripeness.

Originally found in tropical climates, pod radish is a perennial crop that requires little effort to grow. However, in cold climates, it is better to grow this plant like a regular radish, planting seeds or seedlings in well-drained soil with the onset of stable positive values of average daily temperatures.

When choosing a site for growing Javanese radish, it is important to try to choose places devoid of excessive shading - this plant loves the sun and tolerates even short-term periods of drought well.

Sowing seeds is done in the same way as for ordinary radish. In some cases, you can use seedlings germinated in advance - for planting in open ground.

The plant sprouts no more than ten days after planting, and a month after the first shoots appear, the formation of a pod radish bush will begin.

When planning plantings, care should be taken to organize the support system for emerging plants, otherwise, during the period of active growth, they may begin to break under the weight of their own branches.

The full formation of the Javanese radish bush is completed about 50 days after germination. It was during this period that the first peduncles appear on the plant. At the end of flowering, pods begin to form on the bush - juicy, fleshy, with excellent taste. As they ripen, the fruits acquire a sharper taste and similarity to the taste qualities of the radish we are used to.

At the end of the fruiting period, branches with the remaining seed pods are cut from the bushes and tied into bunches. Then the resulting bundles are dried in a natural way, and only then the seeds are collected for planting next year.
