Houttuynia cordate is beginning to gain its popularity among flower lovers. If you have not heard about it yet, then after meeting you will definitely want to buy it
Houttuynia has firmly won the hearts of flower growers all over the world for a long time. In Russia, they began to grow it relatively recently, but many have already managed to fall in love with it. About 5 years ago I was lucky and I got this wonderful flower.
Attractiveness
The appearance of hauttuinia amazes the eye of even the most spoiled buyer. All 3 traffic light colors are present on the leaves: red, green, yellow. They bizarrely mix with each other, forming the most incredible patterns. The middle is dark green (sometimes with a slight bluish tint), the edge is bright pink, turning red over time. The space between them is occupied by a light yellow hue.
Inflorescences are small. The middle resembles an ear, framed by dazzling white petals.
The small growth of the plant (20-30 cm) allows the use of hauttuinia as a ground cover in the foreground of flower beds, rabatoks, mixborders, alpine slides. Looks beautiful in flowerpots located near buildings.
Living conditions
Houttuynia is a universal perennial plant. Feels great both in the shallow water of the reservoir and on land. Loves sunny or slightly shaded areas, loose, moisture-permeable soil, fertilized with compost. It responds well to watering during dry periods.
It sprouts late, at the end of May, keeping its leaves from spring frosts.
Many believed that the plant winters poorly in the Central zone, as it was brought from the southern regions of Asia. But in practice, it has shown excellent winter hardiness. Does not require shelter and storage in special conditions.
Care and reproduction
The main care consists in regular watering, rare top dressing with complex fertilizers, removal of dried inflorescences in order to maintain an attractive appearance.
Houttuynia is propagated in late spring by dividing the rhizome. It is cut into pieces of 6-7 cm each. They moisturize the soil well. Delenki are planted to a depth of 12-15 cm, sprinkled with a fertile substrate. The surface is mulched to reduce evaporation.
The first time is often watered for better survival. Further, the amount of water is reduced to a minimum.
At the beginning of summer, the grafting method is used. Cut out the growing shoots, rooting them in the humid conditions of a greenhouse located in a shady place. The temperature is maintained at 22-25 degrees. In August, young plants are planted in a permanent place.
The first year after the division is not worth the risk. It is better to cover the planting with non-woven material or spruce branches.
Houttuynia cordate is a peculiar flower. She grows where she likes. Therefore, it can move around the flower garden without obstacles. The people call her "running." The plant itself chooses a place where comfortable growing conditions are present.
Keeping it within a given area is pretty easy. For this, limiters are used: slate, iron, unnecessary containers without a bottom. The material is buried in the ground to a depth of 40 cm, exposing the upper edge 3 cm above the surface.
Rooted seedlings are placed inside the "limiter". Further, there will be no more hassle with its cultivation.
Use in reservoirs
Two types of planting hauttuynia are used in reservoirs:
• directly into the shallow water ground;
• in a container with earth.
If the pond is of natural origin, then the rhizomes are planted immediately at its bottom. Under artificial conditions, containers with planting material are used, which are lowered into a reservoir. Expanding, the leaves form a beautiful motley island among the water surface.
For the winter, such plants are stored in basements or cellars. In the spring they return to their place.
Houttuynia heart-shaped is unpretentious in care. With its unique beauty, it will create bright rainbow glades in your garden.
