Seat selection
Land requirements for carrots are minimal, it is important that there is a lot of sun. Permissible shading is no more than 2 hours a day. The preferred soil is neutral, loose. In acidified, clayey areas, the fruit is deformed.
The predecessors play an important role, it is not recommended to sow carrots where the umbrella, parsley and carrots grew. The best predecessors: onions, garlic, nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes). A good option is a bed on which cabbage and cucumbers grew.
How to prepare a garden bed
The land is being prepared in the fall. The work can be done in one day or be done in stages, observing the rules:
• digging with weeds removal;
• adding natural baking powder (sand, compost, peat;
• acidity check, with increased rates, lime is added;
• application of fertilizers (per 1 sq. / M 1 tbsp. L. Superphosphate, potassium and nitroammophoska);
• final digging, bed formation.
After adding all the components, digging is performed on the bayonet floor. Fresh manure cannot be applied under the carrots, the root crop will develop poorly, it will become bitter and thick-skinned.
When to sow carrots
The quality of the crop depends on the sowing time, therefore the sowing time for a particular crop is indicated on the package. For example: early ripening, salad species are sown before winter or early spring. Late - after complete warming up of the earth: end of May - second decade of June.
June plantings are good because root crops are not affected by carrot flies. Sub-winter sowing is possible in regions with snowy winters and temperatures of at least -20.
Seed preparation, sowing
The germination period of carrots is 15-25 days after sowing. This process can be shortened by 5-7 days if the seeds are soaked beforehand. Take a cotton pad (cotton cloth, cheesecloth, paper towel), put on a saucer, moisten and distribute the seeds evenly on this substrate. Cover with a cloth and leave for 2-3 days, maintaining moisture. Granulated seeds are not soaked.
Before sowing, the bed must be loosened with a rake, make a flat surface, cut grooves from south to north, at intervals of 15 cm, with a depth of 2-3. Shedding furrows with warm water will improve germination.
When the water is absorbed, the seeds are laid out randomly or in increments of 2-3 cm, after which the furrows are covered with loose soil (peat, purchased seedling mixture). The planting depth should be 1, 5-2 cm. Watering is carried out and before the sprouts appear, the bed is covered with spunbond or polyethylene.
Care
Carrots grow well in light soil, need loosening and weeding. In the phase of emergence of true leaves, the first thinning is done (3 cm between plants). The second is the appearance of the third sheet (6 cm each). The third time - the root has reached 7-10 cm.
Water the garden with carrots abundantly every 5-7 days. The depth of soaking is equal to the length of the carrot tail, adult planting a few steps before moistening by 30 cm.
Top dressing
The first feeding is 3 weeks after germination, the second is 30-40 days later. The composition is prepared in 10 liters (bucket): 2 tbsp. ash + 1 tbsp. l nitroammophoska + 1 tbsp. l. double superphosphate + matchbox with a slide of urea + matchbox of potassium nitrate.
