Not every type of fig tree will do well indoors and bear fruit. In indoor floriculture, no matter how offensive it is, its close relative, the ficus, is more common. However, when choosing a self-pollinated variety specially bred for these purposes, your home will be decorated with a magnificent ornamental plant with amazing palm leaves and original blue, purple and purple fruits
Conditions for growing a fig tree
A fig tree may seem like a non-capricious plant, it will grow both on a light windowsill and in darker corners of the apartment. However, you need to remember that this is a light-loving crop, and if you intend to get a harvest of fruits, then this happens extremely rarely in shading. In the homeland of the fig tree, they say that it likes to keep its head in the sun and its feet in the water. This is a hint to flower growers that in addition to heat and light, a plant needs a lot of moisture.
The fig tree migrated to our latitudes from countries with a subtropical climate. And in warmer regions, when grown outdoors, the plant not only slows down in growth, but also sheds its leaves. In indoor conditions, the period of leaf fall is not so pronounced, but this can also depend on the variety and variety. In any case, in the winter period, the pot needs to be watered less in apartments, and do not forget to spray the leaves.
In February, along with the appearance of new leaves, fruits are formed. If they fall off, this indicates that it is necessary to lower the temperature of the content. In April, pots from stuffy rooms are moved to balconies, put in front gardens. By autumn, the fruits will be tied again. The absence of fruits in autumn, with an outwardly good condition, indicates that the tree has entered a state of dormancy, and fruiting should be expected as early as next year.
Fig tree care indoors
When the cycles of the fig tree are not violated, growth occurs normally, then the volume of irrigation is increased, top dressing is applied. Mineral fertilizers alternate with organic ones. An infusion of mullein is suitable for this. Top dressing is carried out 2 times a month.
Good results are obtained by feeding with such microelements as boron, manganese, copper, molybdenum. To do this, once a season - preferably in the spring - it is recommended to spray the pet with a solution of potassium permanganate or copper sulfate.
To achieve fruiting, you should also be aware of the necessary pruning of the tree. The fact is that the peculiarity of young plants is the formation of fruits twice a year. After the winter period of dormancy, by summer, harvest on two-year last year's shoots. And in the fall, the fig tree bears fruit already on annual shoots. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out consistent crown formation to stimulate the growth of new branches.
Transplanting a fig tree
Transplantation into a fresh substrate is carried out every one to two years. If you used the grafting method for reproduction, then the rooted planting material is initially placed in a pot with a diameter of no more than 7 cm. To do this, use the following soil mixture:
• sod land - 4 parts;
• humus - 2 parts;
• sand - 1 part.
As the pet grows, it is consistently provided with a container with a diameter of 9, and then 11 cm. This is done carefully, using the transfer method, adding a mixture of the same composition.
A grown fig tree needs a qualitatively different transplanting substrate. The mixture is prepared from:
• turf land - 4 parts;
• humus - 2 parts;
• deciduous - 1 part.
A small part of sand or crushed brick is also used.
Fruiting of a fig tree grown from a cutting occurs at 2-3 years of age. Those who want to get figs by seed reproduction will have to be patient, since in this case the terms are stretched for 5-6 years.
