I was interested in the name of the flower, which sounds like "Balsam or touch-me-not." I began to look for literature in order to get to know him better, and discovered that this is a flower, familiar from early childhood. He always grew with us in a simple flower pot on our wide windowsill, but we called him very simply and affectionately - "Vanka wet". Its bright red flowers abundantly covered a medium-sized bush, and crystals appeared along the edges of the leaves, similar to grains of granulated sugar. They were sweet, and we carefully removed them from the leaves and put them in our mouths
Garden balsam or touch-sensitive balsam
It turns out that balsam can be grown not only on a windowsill, but also as an annual plant in a summer cottage. For this, "balsam garden" or "touch-sensitive balsam" are suitable. Its erect pyramidal bush rises to a height of 20 to 70 centimeters.
The smooth, fleshy shoots are even slightly transparent, and if you freeze and watch them, you can see how the plant's nutritious juices move from the roots to the leaves and flowers.
Quite large (up to 4 cm) flowers of irregular shape can be of all kinds of colors: white, pink, red, lilac, less often purple. They are snugly nestled in the axils of green leaves. Terry varieties of garden balsam with camellia-like, clove-like, pink-shaped flower forms have been bred.
Growing conditions in the country
Natives of the tropics and subtropics, annual balsams love warmth and light, but they must be protected from direct rays of the sun. They gravitate so much towards heat that even light frosts are fatal for them.
Balsams prefer loamy soils, fertilized with organic matter and mineral fertilizers. In warm weather, they require abundant watering. In cold weather, watering should be delayed so as not to provoke rotting of the stems at the very base of the plant.
Reproduction
Garden balsam is propagated by seeds. They are sown in late March or early April in boxes or pots. After about a week, plus or minus 1-2 days, seedlings appear that thin out or dive.
In June, when the weather forecast for frost no longer promises, the seedlings migrate to open ground, sitting at a distance of 20-35 centimeters from each other.
The best varieties of garden balsam
• "Imp" is a low-growing plant with a height of 20-25 centimeters. The flowers have fifteen different colors.
• "Florette" - the height of the bushes is 15 centimeters. The flowers have eleven different colors.
Use in the garden
Long and abundant flowering of balsams makes them a welcome participant in all kinds of flower beds. They will become a decoration for flower beds and flower beds; will comfortably settle down in the foreground of the mixborder; decorate the green lawn with an independent group.
They decorate the porch of the house, balconies, terraces, planting the plant in containers, garden vases.
Room balsam
As an indoor flower, Waller's balsam or New Guinea hybrid balsam is used.
Waller's balsam
Actually, Waller's balsam is a universal plant. It is grown not only indoors, but also outdoors in the summer. The plant is quite unpretentious, even withstands drought, recovering after receiving moisture.
Waller's balsam is a shade-tolerant plant, therefore, in Europe, they like to decorate the near-stem circles of garden trees.
Flowers are simple and double, one-color or two-color. Plants with dark colored flowers show great resistance and vitality.
The return of flowers that have spent the summer in open spaces is not always painless for plants. Therefore, it is recommended not to transfer the whole plant, but to cut the cuttings in August and root them in flower pots.
