An effective method for forcing onions in winter
The record holder of beneficial effects on the body in winter is the green onion feather. It is rich not only in vitamins, but also in active phytoncides, which guard pathogenic bacteria and do not allow colds to break through this barrier. Such beds are often arranged according to the hydroponic method, when the bottom of the bulb is immersed in a vessel with water or nutrient solution. This method is not the most effective, as containers take up a lot of space, but they do not produce a lot of greenery. Among the disadvantages are also an unpleasant odor and rotting of the bulbs.
A better solution would be to arrange a multi-tiered bed in a box with a nutrient substrate. For this:
1. A layer of soil is poured at the bottom of the box.
2. Prepared bulbs are laid out tightly to each other in a bridge manner.
3. The remaining empty space between the turnips is filled with the substrate.
4. On the first layer of bulbs, the second is placed in a checkerboard pattern.
5. Also fill the space between the bulbs with earth.
Instead of boxes, you can use another suitable container: construction plastic bags, plastic buckets. But they need to provide drainage.
As the greenery grows, the feather finds a way through the ground to look out. At the same time, from a limited planting area, it turns out to collect a double crop of vitamin greens. The main thing is not to delay the collection of the feather, so that the greens do not stretch and dry out.
Conditions for forcing greens at room conditions
Keep the boxes of bulbs in the first week after planting in the dark. In this case, it is recommended to maintain the temperature at room temperature - not lower than + 18 ° C. Watering is carried out every 3-4 days. When greenery appears on the surface of the soil, the container is transferred to the light.
The optimum temperature for forcing greens is approximately + 20 … + 22 ° С. This will ensure a full feather trimming after three weeks. This period can be reduced to two weeks. To do this, the temperature of the content should be increased to + 27 ° C. However, it should be borne in mind that this technique will lead to a strong pull of the greenery. If you do not use the mass soon, the feather will become fragile and fade very quickly.
It takes patience to get high-quality products with strong elastic feathers of rich dark green color and delicate taste. Such a yield can be obtained by keeping the boxes of onions cold. At a temperature of about + 15 ° C, the first harvest will be obtained no earlier than in 4 weeks. If the boxes are kept in a cool room at a temperature not higher than + 11 ° C, the greens will be obtained only after 7 weeks, but these will be products of the highest quality.
Preparing the bulbs for planting
The choice of bulbs for forcing has its own nuances. In this case, they adhere to the following rule:
• first of all, sevok is used for forcing;
• closer to the middle of winter, start forcing the sample;
• large specimens are put on forcing in spring.
The bulbs selected for the production of greens are stored at temperatures from 0 ° C to + 3 ° C. An insulated balcony, attic or dry basement is suitable for this.
The bulbs must be awakened immediately before setting for distillation. To this end, warm baths are arranged for them. In order for the vegetable to start growing more quickly, it is recommended to cut the neck of the onion to the shoulders. It is also advised to make vertical cuts of the turnip by a third.
