Favorite conditions

In the middle lane, the Thunberg barberry hibernates without shelter. There are varieties with a pyramidal, rounded, cascading crown. Equally well tolerates drought, heavy rainfall. Grows on any type of soil. Some varieties become brighter by autumn than in summer.

Hardly survives stagnant waterlogging. The proximity of groundwater leads to decay of the root system. It grows well in urban conditions, tolerates high air pollution. Light-loving plants easily tolerate openwork penumbra. When shaded, the foliage of brightly colored varieties turns a little green, the colors fade.

Landing

Single plantings against the background of a lawn - bushes are distributed at equal intervals at 1, 5-2 m tall specimens, 1-1, 2 m undersized options. Hedges are formed according to a dense scheme: 2 plants are planted per linear meter. Two-row landings are oriented in a staggered manner.

Previously, the area for barberry is filled with humus, the acidity is lowered due to wood ash or lime, complex fertilizer is added. They dig a shovel onto the bayonet, mixing the introduced components, remove the roots of the weeds.

Pits are formed with a depth of 30-40 cm, depending on the size of the underground part. The seedlings are installed in the middle, covered with earth to the level of the root collar. Care

In isolated areas, lawn grass is sown. It helps to fight weeds, retains moisture. In complex mixborders, frequent loosening is carried out, the removal of "competitors".

In dry periods, water abundantly once a week. Top dressing begins next season. In early spring, nitrogen is given for active growth, in the middle of summer - a complex fertilizer in a soluble form "Kemira Lux", "Zdraven", a tablespoon per bucket.

Sick, shriveled branches are removed in the spring after bud break. On old specimens, thinning pruning is carried out. A hedge is formed twice a season: in June, early August. The ends of the branches that go beyond the structure are cut out. Low-growing options do not need a haircut.

Use in the national economy

When blooming, each bud emits a tart, sweet aroma, attracting bees. The nectars of the inflorescences emit a clear liquid. Golden yellow honey collected from barberry is valued on a par with buckwheat, linden, and flower honey. In industrial farms on the plantations of this culture, hives are taken out during the opening of the buds to collect a useful product.

In Russia, wild forms of barberry were used to make liqueurs. In rich cabbage soup, young plates replaced sorrel leaves. Dried, chopped fruits were used as a seasoning for meat dishes.

Ripe berries were mixed with alum. They gave a pink tint to linen, wool, paper. The roots dyed natural fabrics, the skin yellow. The wood of a solid structure was used for the manufacture of turning products, shoe nails.
