Many people like to add ginger root to tea. First, the tea acquires a pleasant aftertaste and unique aroma. Secondly, ginger helps those who wish to lose weight. Thirdly, it helps to fight colds and well restores the immune system after lingering illnesses

Nowadays, ginger is quite easy to buy in the supermarket or in the market, but it is also easy to grow it yourself. To do this, you will need a long pot (although you can take several ordinary ones, I have a long one), soil and planting material.

Important! The growing season for ginger is long, its period is on average 9-10 months, therefore, in order to get its root by the season of colds, it is best to plant planting material in February or at the very beginning of March.

The choice of planting material and preparation for planting

You can buy tubers suitable for planting at any store or in the market. The main condition: the root must not be frozen (when purchased on the market), the root must be firm, dense and smooth to the touch and must have live buds on it.

At home, we take out the purchased planting material from the bag, prepare a weak warm solution of manganese and place the root there for several hours. Then we put it in a bag and put it in a warm, bright place to germinate. After the eyes appear on the root, we take it out of the bag and carefully divide it into parts. Each piece should have a living kidney. In general, the whole process of preparing ginger root for planting resembles the process of preparing for planting potato tubers.

We have prepared the planting material, now you can proceed to the next stage.

Soil preparation and planting

For planting, I usually just buy a good nutritious soil from any flower shop. But you can also cook it yourself: for one part of river sand we take one part of turf and 2 parts of peat, mix well and disinfect it either by steaming, or calcining, or using any special means. Please note that the soil for planting ginger should be very nutritious, light and breathable.

Pour pebbles or small crushed stone at the bottom of the pot, then you can add a thin layer of sand (I add if there is sand at hand, if not, then there is enough crushed stone). We take a piece of ginger root with a bud, sprinkle the cuts with wood ash (you can take the dust from charcoal) and plant them in a pot to a depth of 2-3 centimeters. Water, cover with glass or foil and wait for the shoots. Be patient, seedlings can appear at any time within two months. Therefore, if your plant is in no hurry to break through to the surface, do not throw it away, wait a little.

Care

After the ginger sprouts, remove the plastic from the pot and place the plant on any light-colored windowsill on the shady side of the house. The plant does not like direct sunlight.

Ginger care is very simple. Firstly, ginger loves moisture, so it is advisable to water it regularly. Secondly, it is advisable to spray the plant at least once every two days, but best of all - every day. Thirdly, feed the ginger with any complex fertilizer once every 3-4 weeks.

In summer, a pot with a plant (which, by the way, can reach a meter in height) can be taken out into the street in the shade or put on the balcony, also making sure that it is not exposed to direct sunlight.

Harvesting

After about 5-6 months, leaves will begin to fall off the plant, the trunk will begin to turn yellow. So the ginger is ripening. Stop spraying the plant and cut back on watering. When the sprouts are completely dead, you can dig the roots out of the ground. Carefully scrape off the ground and wound in a dry place, using as directed.
