It is impossible to pass by the mountain ash indifferently. Her slender waist is wrapped in an openwork green outfit. Bright orange-red clusters of apple-berry beads are more mesmerizing than diamonds. In the old days in Russia, mountain ash was a symbol of peace and happiness in the family, and its branches and bunches of berries were laid out in the house, between the window frames, protecting the home from various evil spirits

Rowan as a muse of poets

Marina Tsvetaeva has a special relationship with mountain ash. The red rowan brush symbolizes the birth of a new life. The sensitive and quivering soul of the poet came into the world. And although fate and the brush of mountain ash are bitter, the desire to "gnaw" them does not end.

Sometimes mountain ash is associated with female sadness, loneliness, when you so want to get to that shore, closer to the mighty and strong oak tree, in order, like a liana, to twine around its powerful trunk and hide under the shade of its foliage from all worries and worries. But the river of life rushes its indifferent waters, does not allow the mountain ash to get over to the oak.

Disinfection of water

Our ancestors were not afraid of thirst if there were no springs with clean water on the way. The only important thing was the presence of red rowan in this area, and she is a regular in our climatic zones. This was especially true for hunters who had to use water from ponds, swamps, and even from rain puddles.

In order not to become a victim of pathogenic microbes, a person added a sprig of rowan with leaves and berries, if any, to a vessel with water. After a couple of hours, this water could be drunk without any fear.

This magical ability of mountain ash is due to the presence of sorbic acid in it, which has a high antimicrobial effect, suppressing the growth and destroying dangerous microbes, mold and parasitic fungi, but at the same time it is not toxic to humans. Actually, sorbic acid was first obtained by the German chemist Hoffmann in the middle of the 19th century from the juice of rowan berries and was named after her. Indeed, in Latin the word "mountain ash" sounds like "Sorbus".

Storing vegetables

Thanks to the same sorbic acid and the presence of pectins, mountain ash not only disinfects water, but also is an excellent preservative for vegetables and food. The peasants, fermenting cabbage and apples in wooden barrels, must add rowan branches to the contents so that the cabbage and apples would be preserved for a long time and with high quality.

Chopped rowan leaves are poured over potatoes, carrots, so that they can be stored longer in cellars or at home. But it is recommended to sprinkle the beets with chopped viburnum leaves. Of course, rowan leaves are not a panacea for storing vegetables. No leaves will save them from damage if you prepare vegetables for long-term storage in bad faith, that is, do not dry them, do not sort out whole specimens for storage, without visible damage and rot. But the topic of preparing vegetables for long-term storage is a separate independent topic. Here we are only talking about the fact that rowan leaves will improve storage conditions.

Cooking applications

From mountain ash, jelly is obtained that is amazing in color and taste. You can cook jam, mashed potatoes, jam; cook candied fruits, kozinaki; to make juice, fruit drink, alcoholic liqueurs and tinctures.

Rowan berries can be dried, dried, pickled, both independently and in a company with other vegetables, berries and fruits.

The health benefits of red rowan
