Noticing wasps on grapes, many summer residents begin to worry about the future harvest. And rightly so, because wasps are capable of very much harm to grape plantings. And if there are a lot of them, then you can completely forget about a good harvest. So, in the name of saving the long-awaited harvest, you need to fight wasps! How can this be done, and what may be needed for this?
Planting resistant varieties
Wasps are capable of damaging almost any grape varieties, invariably choosing the most fragrant, sweet and ripe berries, covered with a thin skin. But sour and poorly ripened berries are not at all interesting to these insects. Moreover, there are grape varieties that do not attract wasps at all, for example, "Jubilee" is a hybrid form of the notorious Kherson "Dachnik". Wasps do not try to feast on grapes of the varieties "Strashensky", "Talisman", "Gift to Zaporozhye", "Black Rapture", as well as "Laura", "Arcadia" and "Kodryanka".
"Pouches" against wasps
To protect against wasps, you can put on the grape bunches special "bags" made of fine mesh, which will reliably protect ripening berries from birds. Suitable for the construction of such bags and nylon tights or tulle. The most important thing to pay attention to when making them is that they are loose enough and do not pinch the grapes. And they must also allow air to pass through, otherwise the berries will begin to rot right on the bushes.
Wasp traps
Traps filled with sweet syrup combined with insecticides are hung throughout the vineyard during the ripening period of the berries. They can be built from the lower parts of plastic bottles, and it is not difficult to tie such traps to trellises using wire. To prepare syrup, you can take old jam and dilute it with water. And to make it easier for the wasps to go down to the treat, it will not hurt to insert a few sticks into the traps. As the syrup in the traps decreases, it must be topped up. By the way, plants growing next to vineyards can be sprayed with this syrup.
You can use instead of syrup and pieces of sweet fruit (plums, apples or pears, watermelon or melon, etc.) or overripe vegetables, which are also pre-treated with highly effective insecticides.
"Liquid smoke" for fighting wasps
Used for smoking meat, "Liquid Smoke" has proven itself well in the fight against wasps. So it can also be used to scare away these unceremonious insects by sprinkling them well near the grape bushes. And after carrying out such treatment, you should thoroughly wash your hands and face with soap. But such a smell disappears, unfortunately, very quickly.
Wasp disposal chemicals
Various chemicals will also serve well in the fight against wasps. In this case, chemical treatments must be carried out in strict accordance with the instructions. And in no case should the grapes themselves be treated with insecticidal preparations - such agents are intended exclusively for spraying the nests. And when going to the processing of wasp nests, you must dress in such a way as to completely eliminate the likelihood of being bitten by angry insects.
Salt and mustard solutions
Wasps really do not like everything salty, which means that it is a sin not to use such knowledge in practice. If you dilute 50 grams of salt in a ten-liter bucket, you get an excellent means for spraying grape bushes.
The mustard solution also helps to fight wasps just as well, for the preparation of which twenty grams of mustard are diluted in ten liters of water.
Little trick
If you place a dummy wasp nest near the vineyard, the wasps will also try to leave the site as soon as possible. The fact is that these insects, in order to avoid wars between families, under no circumstances settle in the immediate vicinity of neighboring hives. So it's worth taking on board this little trick!
