Why are warm cucumber beds good?

It's no secret that cucumbers are thermophilic plants, which means that they will grow best in warmth. This culture develops especially well on the so-called warm beds, however, there are some subtleties of cultivation here too - in order to get excellent yields, it is important to learn how to properly arrange and equip warm beds. However, this is not so difficult

Types of warm beds

There are three main types of warm beds: these include deep-filled beds that are built on the soil surface of the beds, as well as beds placed above the soil surface. Before proceeding with the construction of any of them, it is first recommended to draw a general plan of the garden and carefully think over exactly where they will be placed. At the same time, on flat summer cottages, the beds intended for growing cucumbers should be oriented in the direction from south to north, but if there is a slope on the site, then you will first have to build horizontal terraces, and then equip the beds in boxes.

How to build a deep bed?

For its construction, you first need to dig a trench, ideally a couple of shovels deep, and then lay out this trench across with pre-prepared twigs and sprinkle it thoroughly with sawdust. And on top of the sawdust with branches, another layer of straw, obsolete autumn foliage, all kinds of garden waste, which did not have time to finish compost or newspapers, is laid (they can be quite safely replaced with pieces of cardboard). The thickness of this layer should be between five and seven centimeters. Then the entire structure is poured with warm water, after which a mixture of compost and garden soil is poured on top of it. Such a bed without much difficulty will last at least five years, but usually its service life is even more impressive. At the same time, there is absolutely no need to supplement the top layer in the second year with compost - it will be produced by the garden bed itself.

The advantages of this kind of beds are many: they are very convenient to water, water never stagnates in them, these beds do not need any spring digging (loosening will be enough), besides, cucumbers can be planted on them much earlier than on simple ones beds!

Beds on the soil surface

It is always much easier to create such beds than the beds described above. First, the future bed is dug up, immediately eliminating all weeds from it, after which a mixture of garden soil and compost with manure is laid on the prepared surface. Next, the workpiece is poured with warm water and covered with a strong film (ideally black). And so that the film does not fly away, it does not hurt to fix it with bricks or rather heavy pebbles. This design is especially well suited for planting cucumber seedlings.

Beds above the soil surface

Such structures will be more complicated, since they provide for the construction of a special box (the so-called vegetable container) - this will require not only boards, but also bricks with slate. Sand is poured onto the bottom of the finished container, followed by wood waste, and on top - a layer of a wide variety of organic waste (eggshells, vegetable and fruit skins, leaves, etc.). The last layer in this case will be straw. Each layer should be well tamped and then watered with liquid manure. And finally, a mixture of compost combined with garden soil is poured on top.

Many summer residents love these structures because they not only take up very little space, but are also very convenient for weeding with watering. At the same time, dirt and clutter will be minimal, and the yield will increase significantly - at least twice! And in order to increase the illumination area of the growing cucumbers, it is recommended to plant them in two rows along the very edges of the box.

Planting cucumbers in early spring - is it possible?

Yes, this is quite acceptable, but in this case it is recommended to cover the cucumbers with greenhouses made of polyethylene and plastic arches - this approach will not only help to enhance the overall effect of using warm beds, but will also contribute to an earlier harvest.
