For many zealous housewives, the summer passes in worries about harvesting and conservation. Cucumbers, tomatoes are packaged in jars by skillful hand, so that in winter the table is rich in pickles. But what kind of pickling and pickling would do without garlic? Its miniature prongs do a tremendous job: sharpening, extending shelf life by fighting putrefactive bacteria. And now is the time to check how they behave in the garlic planting beds
Why are overseas varieties not always successful?
Garlic belongs to cold-resistant crops, and it is planted both in early spring and in autumn with other podzimny plantings. An interesting feature of garlic is that it gets used to its climatic zone, and it is difficult to adapt to new conditions, therefore, it is unprofitable to carry the variety you like from friends and relatives through hundreds of kilometers, because this will negatively affect the harvest and varietal qualities.
What and when to plant?
Which one to give preference to: shooting or non-shooting form? In this case, you need to know that the arrowhead variety is more productive. However, it is better to plant it before winter. Along with such a useful quality as winter hardiness, it also has a noticeable disadvantage - it is poorly stored. And non-shooting forms are better at early spring crops and are distinguished by a higher keeping quality.
It's time to remove the plant arrows
It is difficult not to notice the flower arrows of the shooting garlic in the garden - these shoots sometimes grow to the height of a person. On average, their height is up to 1 m. Such arrows are crowned with an inflorescence hidden in the cap. Here flowers and airy bulbs - bulbs develop.
As a rule, flowers dry out under conditions of long daylight hours, not having time to give seeds. Reproduction is carried out by means of bulbs. As they grow, the cap cracks. However, on those plants that are not intended for reproduction, in June the gardener needs to be careful not to let the inflorescence develop and regularly remove the peduncles. Failure to do this or being late in breaking it out will greatly delay the ripening of the garlic. In addition, this will reduce the yield from the garlic beds by at least 30%, since the cloves will form smaller.
Caring for the future planting material
Bulb arrows are left only on the very best plants - this is the basic rule of seed production. With a simple trick, you can help the bulbs become larger than usual. To do this, when the cap opens, several small bulbs are carefully removed with tweezers.
As the bulbs grow and ripen, they crumble from the arrow, so measures must be taken to prevent the loss of planting material. For this purpose, gauze bags are made, which are put on over the cracked cap. To determine the right time for this, monitor the condition of the greens of the garlic. Yellowing of the leaves will be a signal to use the bags. They are left on the plant until the bulbs are completely ripe. When the time comes to remove the planting material, they are left in a case for storage until spring planting. Thanks to this, they dry out less during the winter.
Caring for planting garlic in early summer
Watering the garlic is carried out every week. Lack of moisture in dry weather reduces yield. Also, garlic is useful for feeding organics: an aqueous solution of chicken manure or garlic. However, it is better not to apply fertilizer in June, otherwise it will slow down the ripening of the bulbs. It's best to mulch the row spacings this month. This will help prevent weeds and better retain moisture in the soil. Mulching is performed using various means. Peat, sawdust manure, humus are suitable.
