We will not have time to look back when the time will come to sow early ripe cabbage for seedlings. To obtain seedlings, these works are scheduled for the second half of February. Having managed to do everything on time, the first harvest of fresh juicy leaves can be obtained even earlier than the record for the speed of growing - lettuce
Features of growing cabbage on your personal plot
Not everyone undertakes the cultivation of cabbage. And the point is not even that it is very demanding on soil fertility and irrigation. This sprawling beauty requires a large area for itself. But, in addition, she needs a frequent change of location. It is not recommended to grow cabbage in the same place due to the fact that it easily transfers the pathogens of keels, bacterial rot to its successors.
To avoid infection, cabbage is planted after corn, onions, cucumbers. In addition, you should take care in advance of preparing the site for placing this representative of the Cruciferous family on it.
Preparing the soil and filling the beds with fertilizers
Prepare the sleigh in the summer, and the soil for the cabbage in the fall. Land cultivation measures include shallow loosening after harvest. And after about two weeks, a deeper digging is carried out, during which organic fertilizers are applied to the beds. It can be rotted manure, humus.
The spring loosening of the beds, simultaneously with the application of fertilizers and the preparation of the holes, is planned for one day with the planting of seedlings in the ground. The best tool for loosening the ground for cabbage is a cat-hoe with long arched teeth. A rake surface is useful for leveling.
After marking, a handful of humus and a spoonful of garden mixture are added to the holes. A worthy replacement for humus will be peat or other kind of compost. Organics can be mixed in advance with mineral additives at the rate of up to 2 g per 1 sq. M. the area of the beds. Then the wells are moistened with copious amounts of water. When moisture is absorbed into the soil, you can start planting seedlings.
Planting seedlings and caring for cabbage beds
The planting scheme can be different, but it is important to provide the cabbage with a sufficient nutritional area, and yourself with a convenient approach for caring for plants:
• 50 x 50 cm;
• 60 x 40 cm;
• 70 x 30 cm.
The least traumatic will be the transplantation of seedlings, which were grown in sod-humus cubes. Then such an individual pot is simply dropped in the center of the hole. When a cup is used for growing seedlings, it is gently turned over by grasping the stem with the index and middle fingers of the left hand and clasping the root system with the palm of your hand. So the plant is lowered into the hole, and the earth is poured into the hole with the right, evenly compacting around the stem.
Watering the beds after transplanting is carried out daily for the first time. At first, the soil is moistened only in a halo around the stalk, gradually expanding the irrigated area. After one and a half to two weeks, the entire area of the cabbage beds is irrigated.
The plant is moisture-loving, but we must not forget that with waterlogging, favorable conditions are created for the development of keels on the root system. Another dangerous enemy of planting is the cabbage fly. Its departure begins in early May, and it is recommended to spray against the pest. To do this, use karbofos, phosphamide, chlorophos.
You also need to be on the lookout for the activation of cabbage whites, caterpillars, leaf beetles, rape sawfly larvae - these insects are not averse to feasting on the delicate greens of young plants. Such pests are removed from plants by hand.
You can fight cabbage aphids with an infusion of green tops of potatoes and tomatoes. To do this, 1 kg of potatoes are infused for at least 3 hours in 10 liters of water. And from the stems and leaves of tomatoes, a decoction is prepared over low heat. The resulting insecticide is sprayed with plantings in the evening.
