The development of the selection direction in the creation of new varieties is impossible without the Delyawey peony and the yellow variety. They differ slightly from bush forms in their structure. Let's take a closer look at these representatives
Peony yellow
A semi-shrub with weak branching up to 2 meters in height. The stems are glabrous, the leaves are up to half a meter long, doubly pinnate, segmented, light green, smooth.
Inflorescences are formed in the axils of the upper leaves 3-4 copies, less often one at a time. The beautiful sunny shade of the petals in the middle is adorned with many golden stamens. Pistils are bare 3-5 on one flower, deviated, leathery.
Blooms in June. Seeds are dark brown, shiny, smooth, large in size, ripen in September.
In the wild, it is found in the highland forests of China. Winter hardiness is weak, freezes even when covered. Recovers from dormant kidneys. Blooms later in early July.
Weak decorativeness. It is used by breeders to obtain hybrids with golden petals. The most famous representative of the crossing of the tree and yellow forms is the Lemoine peony. It has yellow-red two-row and simple inflorescences with a diameter of 20 cm.
Peony Delyaveya
A small-branched dwarf shrub up to 1, 5-2 m in height. Stem lignification occurs in the lower part up to half a meter from the soil surface. New growth of green color with a darkish tint. The stems are covered with brownish bark, slightly deviate to the side. Leaves 20 cm double pinnate. They have long segments of an elongated shape, the upper part is dark green, the lower one has a grayish tint. In autumn they turn purple-red. With long petioles.
The inflorescences are simple at the end of the shoot in the axil of the leaves 3-4 pieces are formed. Outwardly, they resemble a wide bowl with a diameter of 7-9 cm, consisting of 5-9 chestnut petals with many stamens.
In the wild, it occurs in forested mountains, reaching a level of 3 km above the sea. Introduced into the culture several centuries ago by gardeners in Japan and China. It got its name from the name of the person who first found this species - the priest Delyavey Yunnane. On the territory of America, Europe, a rare guest. It appeared in Russia in 1908.
Grows well in southern latitudes. During the winter, the upper part dies off. In the spring it is renewed from the lower lignified twigs. In the conditions of the Middle zone, it is weakly winter-hardy. Aboveground shoots completely freeze out. It can recover from dormant buds, rhizomes.
Low winter hardiness requires shelter for the winter with spruce branches, dry foliage, and a large layer of snow.
The appearance is poorly decorative in plantings. In breeding, it is used to create interspecific hybrids that inherit the original chestnut color of inflorescences.
Varietal variety
The modern collection includes about 500 hybrids and varieties of tree peony. For convenience, they are divided into 3 groups:
1. Sino-European. The branches are bent under the weight of terry large-sized, dense inflorescences. On these grounds, individual members of the group are superior to herbaceous forms. Bright colors: pink, red, crystal white, - increase the decorative effect of the bushes. Bred by the method of crossing herbaceous and tree-like varieties by breeders in France, China, Russia, England, America.
2. Japanese. It is based on a yellow peony. Strong stems with simple or semi-double buds that rise above the bush. The size is slightly smaller than that of the tree-shaped inflorescences. Mostly yellow in color. They are distinguished by tenderness, graceful forms of flowers. Frequent guests of amateur collections in Japan.
3. Other hybrids. Use when crossing yellow and Delyavey, Potanin and other forms of tree peony. The most modern trend, gaining popularity every year.
If desired, everyone can start breeding new hybrids. First, you should familiarize yourself with the methods of pollination, acquire a minimum set of original forms. Crossbreeding of interesting specimens is a creative process that requires painstaking work and patience. The result will delight you with bright unusual colors.

Tree Peony. Pests
The pest complex on tree-like peonies has a small number. It is necessary to pay attention to your favorites throughout the season in order not to miss the invasion of "competitors" on the plantation. Quick response, preventive measures will help to save our plants in time from the raids of insidious enemies
Tree Peony. Other Types Of Breeding
The ability to recover from plants from a separate part has long been used by gardeners all over the world. Vegetative cloning produces an exact copy of the original material. The Dahlem method of propagation by vertical layers is often used in practice. Air abduction is typical for amateur floriculture. Let's consider both methods in detail
The Domestication Of Savages (continued)
A few more "savages" that are worth paying attention to. You look, and you will want to allocate them a small corner of the earth in your garden, so that you always have at hand a fragrant seasoning for ordinary dishes, a remedy or nectar for your own bees
Funny Nightshades (continued)
Everything new always pushes the way in people's lives with difficulty. The path to the refectory table was long not only for potatoes, but also for other plants of the Solanaceae family. Partly the fault was the toxic substances found in green fruits. But the man managed to "tame" the poisons, diversifying his table with tasty and, as it turned out, useful for the body vegetables
Breeding Breeding
Lovely inflorescences of the break in early spring delight the eye with bright or innocent white colors. You can increase the number of "favorites" by breeding your favorite species.
